My Fated Alpha's Cruel Game (Elena and Marcus) novel Chapter 197

Chapter 197: Chapter 197 Temporary Sanctuary

Elena’s POV

The knowledge that survivors from the destroyed base would be combing through the wilderness, hunting for us and our scattered pack members, weighed heavily on both Damien and me.

Throughout the dark hours, communications trickled in confirming our warriors had reached their designated safe havens without incident.

None of us returned to our home territory. Instead, we dispersed to allied packs the Hunters had no knowledge of.

As dawn began to break through the canopy above, we resumed our trek through the dense woodland.

Every shadow demanded our attention, every snapping twig could signal danger. We had no way of knowing how relentlessly those soldiers had pursued us, or whether Blackwood’ death had diminished their determination. They might have retreated to regroup at another location entirely.

If additional bases existed, discovering their whereabouts became our priority. I already understood that Briar possessed no intelligence about other installations.

That conversation would have to wait until I could speak with Talia again.

Their retaliation would come swift and merciless after what we had accomplished.

I couldn’t fault them for seeking vengeance. Yet while they viewed this as retribution, for us it remained what it had always been - a fight for survival.

Their pursuit had spanned years, predating even Marcus’s death. They had orchestrated plans to frame him, which explained his conviction that I had orchestrated his murder. They wanted me to inherit his pack, not any other successor.

Our journey continued for several hours until we encountered a dirt pathway where a vehicle sat concealed beneath a camouflage of fallen branches.

We cleared away the natural covering and climbed inside. Damien turned the ignition and guided us along the rough trail until we reached the main highway.

My eyes swept the landscape continuously, but no military presence or Hunter activity appeared anywhere.

"They’re consolidating their forces," I observed.

"Absolutely. At some alternate facility. There’s no telling how many operatives they have stationed there," Damien responded.

"Any word from the Obsidian pack?" I inquired.

"Nothing yet. Only confirmation that Asher successfully extracted Briar," he replied.

"That’s our sole victory in all of this chaos," I acknowledged.

"I’m amazed she agreed to leave. I anticipated much more resistance," he admitted.

"Frankly, so did I. What made her cooperation so straightforward?"

"You think this might be deception?"

"Unlikely. She underwent her transformation and recognizes Asher as her destined mate. She can sense that connection even before coming of age. She wouldn’t jeopardize his safety."

"Though you wish she felt that same bond with us," Damien said quietly.

"Look, I understand it will require considerable time for her to accept us. She was raised believing her birth parents abandoned her. It won’t be easy convincing her that she was kidnapped from our family," I explained.

Deep within my heart, I maintained that faith. But the reality stung - her failure to recognize us after all those years of relentless searching.

Our efforts never ceased. Not when other children joined our pack. Not when pack responsibilities demanded our attention. Hope remained our constant companion, even as doubt crept in that we might never see her again.

Now that possibility had transformed into reality, yet I feared raising my expectations only to face her ultimate rejection.

That outcome wasn’t part of my plans. I wasn’t emotionally prepared for that devastation.

The long drive brought us to the secluded cabin just as darkness settled over the landscape.

Damien maneuvered the vehicle behind the structure before we retrieved our belongings from the rear seat.
