Chapter 222: Chapter 222 Dangerous Ground

Briar’s POV

The meeting ground had been selected with calculated precision.

Spacious enough for visibility. Contained enough for control.

This stretch of disputed territory belonged to no single pack, existing in that dangerous gray zone where borders blurred and old grudges festered. The earth beneath my boots was hard-packed from years of clandestine gatherings that masqueraded as trade negotiations while everyone present knew they were really about power and intimidation. Ancient scorch marks scarred the ground where ceremonial fires had burned and desperate claws had carved their final messages. A circle of towering pines stood sentinel around the perimeter, their dark trunks motionless, branches rustling only when the breeze carried whispers of approaching danger. The atmosphere crackled with tension, electric and volatile, like lightning held captive in a bottle.

I positioned myself dead center in the clearing.

Exactly as the anonymous tip had specified.

No visible protection. No obvious reinforcements. Just me, feet planted firmly apart, spine straight, breathing controlled despite my pulse hammering like a war drum. I flexed my fingers once, releasing tension, feeling the familiar awareness of my body’s readiness. My wolf prowled just beneath the surface, not frantic or desperate.

Patient. Alert. Coiled like a steel spring.

Vehicle engines rumbled in the distance. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Too many to count.

The sound rolled across the open space, deep and intentional, designed to announce their arrival. Dust clouds billowed between the tree trunks first, followed by harsh headlight beams cutting through the gathering dusk. A convoy of black SUVs rolled forward with deliberate arrogance, tires crunching over gravel, engines gunning just enough to demonstrate raw power. They arranged themselves in a strategic semicircle along the clearing’s edge, not quite surrounding but definitely claiming territory with military precision.

Doors slammed shut.

Heavy footsteps struck dirt.

Vanguard’s elite guard deployed with practiced efficiency, spreading outward in calculated formations, each movement measured and purposeful. They claimed ground methodically, eyes constantly scanning, shoulders set, hands relaxed but poised for violence. These weren’t nervous foot soldiers. These were seasoned killers.

Then their leader emerged.

Alpha Vanguard himself.

He advanced with leisurely confidence, arms hanging casually at his sides, carrying himself with the kind of relaxed authority that screamed danger to anyone smart enough to recognize it. Composure wrapped around him like expensive silk, smooth and impenetrable. No hurried movements.

No wasted energy. His steel-gray eyes locked onto mine instantly, cold and calculating, peeling back layers of pretense as if expecting to find weakness hiding underneath.

His lips curved upward.

Not friendly. Not vicious.

Pleased.

"Briar," he called out, his voice cutting cleanly through the evening air without strain. "You have created quite the spectacle."

I remained perfectly still.

I refused to drop my gaze. I ignored the subtle wave of dominance already radiating from his direction. I held my ground like bedrock.

"You trespass on sacred territory without permission," he continued, circling slowly, compelling every eye to track his movement. "You meddle in private pack business that has nothing to do with you. And now you demand concessions."

"I demand justice," I replied.

My words rang out stronger than anticipated. Crystal clear.

Unwavering.

A tremor passed through his assembled warriors. Barely perceptible, but unmistakable. Weight shifted. Confidence flickered like candleflames in wind before steadying again.

Vanguard halted within striking distance. Close enough that his scent flooded my senses.
