Chapter 317: Chapter 317 Supernatural Rules Assert

Briar’s POV

The quiet that follows their standoff feels fragile, like glass stretched too thin. I can sense the tension coiling tighter in the room, and my instincts tell me this pause won’t last. Hesitation and surrender are two different things, and every fiber of my being understands that difference now.

The lead officer keeps his stance firm, but his gaze darts toward the entrance doors repeatedly. That nervous habit alone reveals how little time we have left before this situation spirals completely out of control.

"They’re not giving up," Asher says quietly beside me. His voice stays level, but I catch the underlying steel in his tone. I give him a small nod because my wolf has already reached the same conclusion, her instincts pressed against my consciousness like she’s preparing for battle.

The first sign of trouble comes without any sound at all.

The air pressure changes subtly.

Body language shifts around the room.

The operations floor suddenly feels cramped, as if the walls are drawing closer while the building itself watches and waits. Then the far doors glide open again, this time with practiced silence, and the team that enters moves with deadly precision.

These faces are completely unfamiliar to me.

They advance as one coordinated unit.

Their badges gleam with fresh authority, and the way they survey the room tells me they received very specific orders with zero room for flexibility.

"That’s the extraction squad," Ruth whispers, and I can hear her fighting to keep her voice steady. "They didn’t come here to talk."

The lead officer immediately steps forward, positioning himself directly between us and the approaching team. Something fierce and protective flares in my chest, because he knows exactly what this choice will cost him personally.

"We’re maintaining our position," he states with unwavering conviction. "This sector remains under my authority."

The extraction squad leader doesn’t even slow his approach. "Your authority has been revoked," he responds with mechanical calm that strips away any pretense of diplomacy. "Move aside immediately."

"Absolutely not," the lead officer fires back.

That refusal hangs in the air like a loaded weapon.

The extraction leader’s attention shifts past him and locks onto Asher, studying him with calculating eyes that are already determining how much resistance to expect.

"Asher," he says, wielding his name like he owns it. "You will accompany us immediately. This is for your own safety."

My wolf responds with a silent snarl, every protective instinct I possess screaming at the blatant deception wrapped inside those carefully chosen words.

"I’m staying right here," Asher responds with quiet determination, keeping his posture relaxed but absolutely immovable.

The extraction leader’s focus slides to me next, and I watch his expression change as he realizes I represent an additional complication to his mission.

"Briar," he says with false authority. "Step out of the way."
