Marcus’s POV
"The source is internal," Asher states firmly. "They believe you’re trapped."
"Or cut off," I respond.
Ruth’s device chimes once more. "I’m picking up communications."
"Regarding what," Asher inquires.
"Regarding you," she answers, her gaze shifting toward me. "Detailed tracking. Entry routes."
The full picture crystallizes in that moment.
"They’re measuring reaction speed," I declare. "This isn’t preparation for assault. Not immediately."
Asher’s attention intensifies. "Your certainty comes from where."
"If action were immediate, no advance notice would come," I explain. "They seek submission, not violence."
Ruth gives a slow acknowledgment. "Terror used as control."
"Exactly."
I adjust my suit jacket, pressing the material smooth with purpose, knowing that routine gestures prevent adrenaline from clouding judgment, and I sense my wolf becoming even more composed, stable and alert.
"What we will not do," I state evenly. "No evacuation. No concealment. No dramatic security increases."
Asher starts to speak, then stops, recognizing my strategy and disliking it, yet comprehending the logic.
"What we will do," I proceed. "Documentation. Time records. Expanding witness networks without creating alarm."
Ruth’s expression sharpens. "You’re creating a paper trail."
"I’m making burial impossible," I clarify.
Asher moves nearer. "You’re exposing yourself."
"Correct," I confirm. "Secrecy empowers intimidation."
The device pulses again, but from a different source this time.
Call incoming.
Protected line.
Asher’s identification appears briefly in the routing display, providing enough information before he responds.
He raises it to his ear. "Speaking."
I observe his demeanor shift during the conversation, tension building in his jaw, his eyes moving to me then away as he processes the information.
"Confirmed," he says eventually. "Transmit the details."
He disconnects and faces me. "Protection detail reassignment came through. For me."
Ruth curses. "Creating separation."
"Correct," Asher confirms. "Effective immediately."
I give a single nod, having anticipated this development.
"Variable isolation," I observe. "Removing presumed influences."
