Elena’s POV
Asher speaks quietly beside me. "They want to intimidate you."
"Exactly," I answer. "So I’ll think twice before acting again."
The press briefing shifts into a more aggressive tone, reporters firing questions rapidly as they demand answers, and I study the screen intently as I watch the story tighten, responsibility being forced into an increasingly narrow focus.
"Will you take accountability," a journalist presses.
The spokesperson responds immediately. "Leadership has an obligation to consider how their words impact events."
Ruth makes a disgusted sound under her breath. "Tomorrow’s headlines are already written."
I move toward the control panel. "Connect me to the feed."
Asher whips around to face me. "Not now."
"Yes, now," I say steadily. "But I’m not going to argue with them."
Ruth glances between Asher and me. "What’s your plan?"
"Show them the facts," I answer. "Not my interpretation of them."
I bring up the chronological breakdown Ruth assembled, the precise and merciless arrangement of time stamps that creates a narrative without any editorial commentary, and I experience a profound sense of calm because truth presented this way doesn’t need to raise its voice or plead for attention.
"They expect me to get emotional," I explain. "They’re waiting for an outburst."
"Instead you’ll give them documentation," Asher responds, understanding.
"Exactly."
Before Ruth can establish the connection, her device buzzes with another alert, and her expression turns grim as she reads the message.
"There’s a follow-up directive," she announces. "They’re limiting your mobility for protection."
"Isolation," Asher states bluntly.
"Right," Ruth confirms. "Disguised as a safety measure."
I give a single nod. "Naturally."
The new restriction appears on our internal systems within minutes, the wording carefully crafted and professional, directing me to remain in the facility until additional guidance is provided, referencing concerns about potential violence and the importance of maintaining order.
"They’re exploiting the situation to trap you here," Asher observes.
"While making it look reasonable to everyone else," I add.
The space around us fills with subtle tension as the team processes this development, and I sense the unasked question weighing on everyone’s minds about whether I’ll accept these limitations or challenge them once more.
I choose my response without hesitation.
"Publish the timeline," I instruct.
Ruth pauses for just an instant before acknowledging the command, recognizing the distinction between stirring up trouble and setting the record straight, and the information goes live through our internal network first, then spreads outward, stark and unembellished.
