Chapter 64: Chapter 64 Parental Deception Revealed

Elena’s POV 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Sleep had been impossible that night, and by morning I felt the exhaustion weighing heavily on my shoulders. I made my way down to the kitchen, desperately needing coffee to function, when Damien appeared in the doorway moments after I arrived.

His expression was grim but determined as he leaned against the counter. "I spent hours digging into this situation. My parents don’t actually owe any money to Alpha Marcus. They’re running some kind of con, trying to extract twenty-five thousand dollars from me."

I paused with my coffee mug halfway to my lips, processing this revelation. "That’s what I suspected, but don’t you find it strange that your father specifically mentioned Marcus’s name? I mean, there are countless other Alphas he could have chosen from. Many of them are much closer to our territory than Marcus is."

Damien’s jaw tightened as he considered my words. "You’re absolutely right, and that part has been eating at me all night. There’s no logical reason for him to pick Marcus unless they’ve had some kind of previous dealings. I’ve already got people investigating their connection, but it’s going to take time to uncover the truth. In the meantime, I’ve issued strict orders to the entire pack. No one is to give my parents any money whatsoever, and everyone has been instructed to report any suspicious behavior directly to me."

The conversation took a more serious turn as Damien’s eyes searched my face. "Elena, I need you to think carefully about this. When my father was snooping around in your bedroom yesterday, could he have found anything that might connect you to Alpha Marcus? Any letters, photographs, or personal items?"

I shook my head firmly, setting my coffee down on the granite counter. "There wasn’t anything like that in my room. The only item I brought that has any connection to Marcus is a single book, but your father definitely didn’t discover it. I made absolutely certain of that."

Damien’s eyebrows lifted with curiosity. "What kind of book are we talking about?"

"Marcus specifically asked me to research the historical records of our pack territories. He wants me to investigate whether there’s still an active treaty between his pack and a vampire coven somewhere in our region’s past. I haven’t located the actual treaty document yet, but I have to admit, reading through all that pack history has been surprisingly fascinating."

"I’m sure it has been enlightening," Damien said, though his tone remained concerned. "Are you completely certain that my father couldn’t have stumbled across this book during his search?"

"One hundred percent positive," I assured him, feeling more confident about this than anything else. "I didn’t just hide it in the back of my wardrobe like some amateur. I actually removed several wooden boards from the wall behind my clothes and concealed it inside the wall cavity itself. I know exactly how to hide things so that no one else can find them, not even if they tear the room apart."

Damien nodded slowly, but his expression remained troubled. "Then this situation is either an incredible coincidence, or there’s something much deeper going on here that we haven’t uncovered yet. There’s a real possibility that Marcus already knows you’re living here on our territory."

A chill ran down my spine at that thought. "What am I supposed to do about school? When I’m off pack grounds, I’m completely vulnerable."
