“Seriously? You’re going to cower behind an innocent human? That’s disgraceful, even by vampire standards,” I declared, my voice echoing through the cave.

“I find that rather insulting,” Julian replied as he stepped into the shadowy cavern. The master vampire immediately tightened his hold around the trembling human hostage.

“Where are the others? You promised to bring your entire family,” I demanded, my eyes never leaving the master’s pale face.

“They chose not to participate,” Julian answered with a slight shrug.

“I don’t give a damn about their preferences. They need to be here. This monster makes all of you look bad,” I snapped, my frustration boiling over.

“Why are you taking your anger out on me? Go find them and express your displeasure directly,” he shot back.

A low, menacing growl rumbled from the master vampire, but suddenly Malakai materialized beside him. In one swift motion, he swept the woman into his protective embrace while the master found himself pressed against the cave’s rear wall.

“But damn, it felt incredible to finally voice that truth,” I replied with a wicked grin.

“Malakai, escort her to safety,” Julian commanded. Without hesitation, his brother lifted the woman in his arms and vanished from the cave.

Now Julian and I stood face to face with the master vampire when I heard the familiar sounds of approaching footsteps. Dante, Vera, Wren, Evie, Petra, Claca, and Felix filed into the cave behind me. All vampires united by a common goal climating this particular bastard who tarnished then reputation and made then existence increasingly difficult.
