Elena’s POV 12

I found myself locked in an intense stare–down with a vampire, neither of us moving as

we sized each other up across the small space of my trailer.

“You don’t seem frightened.” His voice carried a note of curiosity.

“Should I be?” I shot back, keeping my tone steady despite the surreal situation.

“Most humans would be trembling by now when faced with my kind.” He tilted his head slightly, studying me with predatory interest.

“Your eyes are golden.” I stated matter–of–factly.

“And that means what to you?” His eyebrow arched in genuine interest.

“You survive on animal blood, not human. The vampires who hunt people have crimson eyes that never fade back to normal.” I watched his expression shift with recognition.

“I see the rumors about your intelligence weren’t exaggerated.” A hint of approval

colored his words.

“What rumors exactly?” My pulse quickened, though I tried to appear unaffected.

“That’s irrelevant right now. I’m here because someone needs to have a serious conversation with you.” His tone grew more serious, the casual atmosphere

evaporating.

“Concerning what?” I leaned back slightly, maintaining eye contact.

“Your reckless decision to shift in full view of multiple witnesses. That was incredibly foolish. His words hit like ice water.

“Excuse me?” Confusion and irritation flared through me simultaneously.

“Your family? What kind of twisted operation are you running here?” I couldn’t keep the sarcasm out of my voice, though his slight smile told me he found my attitude. amusing.

ourselves a family unit. We believe our choice to avoid human prey makes us more evolved than our bloodthirsty cousins. His explanation was matter–of–fact, but something in his demeanor suggested deeper complexities.

“My guard will return shortly, and something tells me he won’t appreciate finding you here uninvited.” I tried to inject authority into my voice.

“I’m well aware of his schedule. I came specifically to warn you about the danger you’re in. There are Alphas actively hunting white wolves across multiple territories.” The gravity in his voice made my stomach clench.

“For what purpose? We don’t possess any special abilities.” Though even as I said it, doubt crept into my mind.

“They’re conducting experiments on white wolves. Apparently your genetic makeup differs significantly from typical werewolves. I don’t understand the scientific details, but the threat is very real,” His words sent chills down my spine.

“What should I call you?” I asked, needing something concrete in this surreal conversation.

He hesitated, conflict playing across his features before his shoulders relaxed slightly. “Julian.” The name came out reluctantly, as if he were breaking some unspoken rule. “I assume you already know mine.” It wasn’t really a question.

“Elena Fairfax. I need to leave now before your guard returns.” He moved toward the door with fluid grace before pausing. “One more thing. My entire family agrees that you deserve better than Alpha Marcus. Remember that rejecting a mate bond works both ways.”

“I understand that option exists. I’m just concerned about his retaliation if I choose that path.”
