42 Chapter 42 Hunt in Darkness
Marcus’s POV
There was no way they could have discovered what Elena meant to me. That knowledge remained impossible for them to possess.
“We should return to pack territory and reassess our strategy. Plan our next approach.” One of my warriors spoke up from beside the wreckage.
“I’m not returning to the pack. Not until I locate her.” I stated firmly, striding back toward the main road.
I retrieved the map once more, spreading it across the car hood to determine our exact position.
Our breakneck speed during the journey here had disoriented me. We’d covered the distance in much less time than it typically required.
Dense forest surrounded our location, but I spotted a small town within reasonable
distance.
I instructed my men to remain at their posts while I took one vehicle and headed. toward the settlement.
The late hours approached rapidly, and I understood the odds weren’t favorable. She possessed no funds or resources. Upon reaching the town, I systematically searched for every motel, hotel, and bed–and–breakfast establishment capable of providing overnight accommodation.
I visited each location, rousing managers from their sleep.
Most displayed irritation until they witnessed my barely controlled rage and I produced the photograph of Elena stored on my phone. She had no idea I’d captured that image of her.
Every single manager swore they hadn’t encountered her. I began patrolling the town. streets, using my phone’s mapping feature for navigation.
Perhaps she’d found shelter in the park or claimed a bench somewhere. Then reality struck me – she’d just survived a vehicle collision.
The hospital became my next destination. I presented Elena’s photograph to the front

desk nurse, fabricating the lie that I was her spouse.
That effort proved equally futile. She wasn’t registered there.
They’d never seen her.
I stormed from the building, nearly shattering the entrance door and terrifying several local residents.
Being human made them fragile and prone to fear.
Returning to where my men waited, I forced myself to consider alternative approaches.
I began researching the closest wolf pack territories in the vicinity.
We marked their locations on the map and began systematic visits to each one. Multiple separate packs existed within a considerable radius of our position. We approached them individually, waking their Alphas to inquire whether they’d seen Elena. Had she arrived seeking sanctuary? I remained uncertain whether to trust their denials, given Viviana’s earlier warning that numerous Alphas harbored hatred toward me. They might withhold the truth.
I dispatched warriors to maintain surveillance on all those packs from safe distances. One territory belonged to Viviana’s uncle. That realization sent chills through me. I couldn’t predict what he might do to Elena if she fell into his grasp.
We returned to the location of Jett’s destroyed vehicle, the final place where I’d confirmed her presence. My cell phone rang again.
“Speak.” I answered curtly.
“It’s worse than we thought, Alpha. Viviana’s friend has been feeding her intelligence while conducting surveillance on you. Viviana has discovered Elena’s existence. She knows about last night as well. Hugo’s voice carried grim news.
“We cannot force Viviana to reveal her knowledge about Elena because she carries Alpha bloodlines. Our commands hold no power over her.” I stated the obvious limitation.
“I understand that.” Hugo confirmed.
“I just finished speaking with her uncle. I informed him that I was tracking an escaped
