48 Chapter 48 Testing Ground Bonds
Elena’s POV
After finishing my morning meal, I climbed the stairs back to my room an

a long shower. The hot water felt incredible against my skin as I washed awa the lingering tension from yesterday’s events. Once dressed, I settled at my computer and threw myself into my work, losing track of time as I focused on the tasks at hand.
Exhaustion finally caught up with me by evening. My eyelids grew heavy, and I barely managed to crawl onto my bed before sleep claimed me completely.
The next morning brought a familiar emptiness to the house. Damien had left early for patrol duties, and the thought of knocking on Gage’s door filled me with dread. I wasn’t ready to face whatever awkwardness awaited me there, especially after yesterday’s uncomfortable encounter with his guest.
Instead, I pulled on comfortable workout clothes and decided to explore the territory on foot. A good run would clear my head and help me familiarize myself with the area. The moment I stepped outside, I sensed watchful eyes tracking my movements. Damien had mentioned that the patrol wolves knew about my presence here, and 1 could feel their attention from the depths of the surrounding forest. They maintained their distance, probably curious about the newcomer who had suddenly appeared in their territory.
Their surveillance didn’t bother me much. If anything, it felt reassuring to know the pack took security seriously. I settled into a steady jogging pace, breathing in the crisp morning air as I made my way along the territory’s perimeter.
About halfway through my route, something shifted in the atmosphere around me. The sensation of being watched intensified, becoming more focused and predatory. Branches rustled in the woods behind me, followed by a low, threatening grow! that made my pulse spike.
A wolf was definitely stalking me now, and this felt different from the casual observation of the patrol guards.
I picked up my pace, but my pursuer matched my speed effortlessly. Every evasive maneuver I attempted failed to shake the persistent shadow trailing me through the trees. My heart hammered against my ribs as I darted around rocks and fallen logs,

trying to create distance between us.
Without warning, a massive black wolf burst from the treeline, launching itself directly at me. Training kicked in instantly, and I sidestepped at the last second while ducking beneath its powerful frame. As it sailed overhead, I drove my leg upward, connecting solidly with its muzzle before grabbing fistfuls of its thick fur.
Using the wolf’s momentum against it, I spun around and sent it crashing into the nearest cluster of trees with a satisfying thud.
I dropped into a defensive stance, muscles coiled and ready for the next attack. But instead of my single opponent rising to continue our fight, multiple wolves emerged from the forest around me. The entire patrol had converged on our location, forming a loose circle as they observed the confrontation.
The black wolf slowly picked itself up from the ground and began the transformation back to human form. As the familiar features emerged, I couldn’t help but smirk.
I
“Did I pass your test, Damien?” I called out, crossing my arms over my chest. “That was pretty fucking impressive,” he admitted, reaching for a pair of shorts someone had tossed his way. “Seriously, where the hell did you learn to fight like that?” “My father served as head warrior for our pack” I explained, the familiar ache of loss tightening my chest. “He died defending the Alpha. Marcus’s father.”
Damien’s expression grew thoughtful as he processed this information. “And then you became mated to Marcus, but the entire pack treated you and your mother like outcasts?”
know it sounds ridiculous,” I said with a bitter laugh. “Marcus’s father was the one who made us pariahs after my dad gave his life for their family.”
“Well, Marcus’s proving he’s no better than his old man was. Damien’s tone carried a sharp edge of disgust. “Come on, I’ll race you back to the packhouse.”
He took off running before I could respond, gaining an immediate advantage. “Hey! You started before me, you fucking cheater!” I shouted, sprinting after him.
The arrogant bastard actually turned to run backwards while laughing at my outrage. Big mistake. I launched myself forward in a flying tackle that brought him down hard, then scrambled to my feet and kept running while he was still sprawled on the ground..

Our race back became an ongoing battle, with both of us taking every opportunity to trip, tackle, or otherwise sabotage the other’s progress. Damien managed to reach the packhouse first, but just barely. He immediately broke into an obnoxious victory dance while I hurled my water bottle at his head.
“You’re such an ass,” I panted, flopping down on the grass in exhaustion.
“What’s wrong? Getting tired already?” he taunted, settling beside me with an infuriating grin.
“Piss off,” I muttered, though I couldn’t quite suppress my own smile.
“How does it feel being somewhere without constant snow?” he asked, his tone becoming more serious.
“I love it here. Even in winter, the weather is so much milder than back home. It’s like a different world.”
“Good to hear.”
“What the hell are you two doing?” Gage’s voice interrupted our conversation.
We looked up to see him escorting yet another different woman away from the packhouse. Damien and I exchanged knowing glances before speaking in perfect
unison.
“Man whore.”
Gage quickly ushered his companion away before returning to confront us, his face flushed with embarrassment and irritation.
“Are you kidding me? Is this what I have to deal with now that she’s here?” he demanded.
“Hell yes,” I replied cheerfully.
