Elena’s POV

“What exactly do you need?” Damien asked, his dark eyes studying my face intently.

“I need you to initiate me into your pack officially. That will sever every remaining connection I have to Marcus’s territory.” The words felt heavy leaving my lips, but also liberating.

Damien and Gage exchanged a look that made something spark between them, and suddenly they were both grinning like they’d just won the lottery.

“I’m calling the event coordinator right now,” Gage announced, already sprinting toward the house before I could even process what was happening.

I stared after him, completely bewildered, then turned to Damien with confusion written all over my face.

“Gage will use literally any excuse to throw a celebration,” Damien explained,

amusement dancing in his voice. “Don’t try to talk him out of it once he gets an idea in

his head.”

“Apparently not,” I muttered, still trying to wrap my head around his enthusiasm.

“So what else should I understand about this place? Where do your parents fit into all this?” I asked, genuinely curious about the pack dynamics I was about to join.

Damien’s expression shifted slightly, becoming more guarded. “They keep to themselves mostly, but they still live somewhere on the property. There’s a decent–sized cabin back in the woods where they stay. Two stories, pretty comfortable. My father understands he’s only welcome in the main house when specifically invited;”

“Sounds like there’s some serious tension there,” I observed carefully.

“That’s putting it mildly” Damien replied, his jaw tightening almost imperceptibly

“Is there anything else about this pack I should be aware of before I commit to this?” I pressed.

“You’ll pick things up naturally the longer you’re here. Some things are better learned through experience than explanation,” he said.

“Fair enough, I suppose,” I agreed.

Damien’s phone suddenly began buzzing, and when he glanced at the screen, his entire demeanor changed. He pressed a finger to his lips, signaling for complete silence, then activated the speaker function.

“Alpha Marcus,” Damien answered, his voice perfectly neutral. “How can I assist you?”

“I wanted to inform you that I’m officially declaring Elena deceased,” Marcus’s voice filled the space between us.

My heart stopped beating for a moment, even though I’d expected this eventually.

“That seems like an awfully quick conclusion to reach,” Damien responded smoothly.

“The mate bond has completely disappeared. I could sense her presence up until she drove away from here. Right up until that car accident happened.”

“If she’d actually died in a vehicle collision, you would have discovered her body by now,” Damien pointed out, maintaining his carefully measured tone. As if I wasn’t sitting right beside him, listening to every word.

“I understand that logically. I’m convinced someone abducted her after the crash. Hell, I’m not even certain the accident was accidental. Someone could have forced her off that road. But the connection between us is completely gone now. I felt the exact moment it severed. I know she’s dead,” Marcus said, and there was genuine pain in his voice that made my chest tighten.

“I’m sorry to hear about your loss. From my limited interactions with her, she seemed like an extraordinary woman,” Damien replied.

“She really was, Marcus whispered.

“Marcus, who are you wasting time talking to? We need to get to the wedding consultant immediately!” Viviana’s shrill voice pierced through the background noise.

I had to look away, shaking my head in disgust at how quickly he’d moved on.

“Well Marcus, it sounds like you have pressing obligations. Wouldn’t want to keep you from your important wedding preparations when you’ve got such a demanding bride–to–be waiting” Damien said, his voice dripping with barely concealed contempt.

“This situation isn’t what you’re imagining Marcus protested weakly

Damien said decisively, ending the call.

“He’s actually going through with marrying her. Why does that surprise me at all? And why does it make me so absolutely furious?” I asked, my hands clenching into fists.

“Because you’re carrying his child and this is the complete opposite of how things should be happening. But none of that matters now. You’ll become a member of our pack through the initiation ceremony. You’ll raise your baby here safely. You can pursue your education and build whatever career you want,” Damien said firmly.

“I really hope you’re right about that,” I said softly.

Gage came bursting back through the front door, practically vibrating with

excitement.

“Everything’s arranged! The celebration is happening tonight. We have so much to accomplish before then. You need to find the perfect dress, and I’ve already scheduled hair and makeup artists to come here. I’ve got people arriving any minute to start setting up decorations and everything else. This is going to be absolutely perfect!” Gage announced breathlessly.

“Is he actually being serious right now?” I asked Damien incredulously.
