58 Chapter 58 Invaded Sanctuary
POVO
The words hit me like a slap across the face, but I refused to let it show.
“Now I understand why you ran away from your old Alpha. He probably wanted you dead,” Martha said with that cruel smile of hers.
I let out a bitter laugh that surprised even me. “Oh, you have no idea.”
Both Damien and Gage turned their attention to me when those words left my mouth. I could see the curiosity burning in their eyes, probably expecting me to break down or lash out at the mention of Marcus’s murderous intentions. But I wasn’t about to give
them that satisfaction.
There was no way in hell I was going to hand them ammunition to use against me later. I had learned that lesson the hard way too many times before.
My past with Marcus would stay buried. Every brutal detail, every scar he had left on my soul – none of it was anyone’s business but mine. This was supposed to be my fresh start, my chance to rebuild from nothing, and I wasn’t going to sabotage it by
oversharing with people who barely knew me.
When the dinner finally ended, Chloe appeared at my side like a guardian angel, grabbing my hand and pulling me toward the makeshift dance floor where the band was playing something upbeat and infectious. Her friends surrounded us, creating a bubble of laughter and movement that made me forget, just for a moment, about all the darkness I had left behind.
To my complete shock, I was actually enjoying myself. The realization hit me like a truck – when was the last time I had genuinely had fun? I couldn’t even remember. Fun wasn’t something that existed in my vocabulary anymore, hadn’t for years,
Maybe there was hope for me in this place after all. Maybe I could actually build something resembling a normal life here.
Chloe kept trying to press glasses of champagne into my hands, her eyes bright with the kind of infectious enthusiasm that only came from youth and Innocence. Each time, I politely declined, telling her the same rehearsed lic.
“I’m just a cheap drunk,” I explained with what I hoped was a self–deprecating smile.

“Trust me, you don’t want to see me after even one glass. I’ll make a complete fool of myself, and I really can’t afford to do that tonight.”
She nodded understandingly, accepting my explanation without question. If only she knew the truth – that I could probably drink everyone at this party under the table without breaking a sweat. Years of using alcohol to numb the pain from countless attacks, from injuries that needed to heal in secret, had built up a tolerance that would probably frighten her.
But tonight wasn’t about drowning my sorrows. Tonight was about fitting in, about proving I could be normal.
Chloe’s friends turned out to be genuinely decent people. They were all around my age, some slightly older, with a mix of college students and young professionals who treated me like I had always been part of their group. The thought that I would actually know people when I started college brought a warmth to my chest that I hadn’t felt in
months.
That’s when I noticed her.
The girl from earlier, the one who had been arguing with Damien, had returned to the party. She stood like a predator surveying her territory, and her eyes were locked on me with an intensity that made my skin crawl.
“Chloe,” I leaned closer to my new friend, keeping my voice casual. “Who’s that girl over there? The one who looks like she wants to set me on fire with her mind?”
Chloe followed my gaze and her expression immediately darkened. “That’s Beatrix. Remember, the one I warned you about? Alpha Damien’s ex–girlfriend, She’s absolutely toxic, and since you’re living in the same house as Damien, you need to watch yourself
around her.”
I filed that information away carefully. “Thanks for the heads up, How many loyal followers does she have?”
“Just a couple, really. She has this habit of driving people away with her attitude,” Chloe explained, rolling her eyes.
“Good,” I said, feeling a familiar strategic mindset clicking into place. “A couple I can handle.”
Beatrix had positioned herself at the edge of the dance floor like she was holding court, soon joined by several other girls who looked like they had coordinated their

outfits – different colored versions of the same tight, revealing dress. Their makeup was flawless in that artificial way that screamed desperation, like they were hunting for someone to take them home tonight.
