Chapter 135: 135/Brotherhood of Blood

Chapter 135

Robert’s Point of View

The moment he uttered those poisonous words and claimed that Julie had chosen him, I felt an explosion in my mind. I didn’t hesitate for a second; I lunged at him with all my weight and swung my fist into his jaw.

Carlos staggered but regained his balance with lightning speed and returned the punch immediately. I cried out from the pain that shot through my temple, while he said in a panting voice: "You’re angry because she wants me, aren’t you?"

I didn’t answer with words, but with another punch that split his lip and turned the white of his teeth into a deep crimson. I shouted, sparks flying from my eyes: "She won’t choose you, Carlos!"

He wiped the blood from his mouth with the back of his hand and rushed at me like a raging bull, returning the blow twofold with a punch that made my vision flicker.

He hissed in frustration: "She will... and you’ll see how we’ll become lovers right before your eyes."

I completely lost my senses; I bent down, grabbed him by his waist with all my strength, and shoved him back violently, sending him crashing into the massive desk.

Papers, pens, and the computer fell to the ground with a resounding crash. I clamped my hands around his neck, squeezing the breath out of him, and said with a terrifying hiss: " I won’t see anything... because you’re going to die in my hands right now."

He delivered a powerful kick to my stomach that made my insides twist with pain. I retreated, clutching my midsection and trying to gasp for air, so he seized the opportunity and stepped forward to land a direct punch to my eye. I stumbled and fell over the liquor cabinet; bottles and glasses shattered, mixing the smell of alcohol with our groans of pain.

Carlos said, gasping for breath with blood running down his chin: "What’s wrong, Robert? Could you not handle the mere thought of seeing her in my arms?"

I raised my foot in a sudden movement and kicked him in the chest with all my might, sending him hard to the floor. I threw myself on top of him and began to rain down punches unconsciously, screaming like a madman: "I’m going to break your damn mouth, Carlos!"

He let out a choked laugh mixed with coughing and pain, saying in a fragmented voice: "I’ll make you pay for this... Robert."

At that moment, the door burst open and Ron entered, looking terrified. He stopped in his tracks, staring in bewilderment at the chaos the smashed desk, the scattered glass, and the two of us struggling like animals on the floor.

I yelled at him without turning: "Get out of here! And don’t let anyone in!"

As soon as he closed the door, Carlos flipped me over and got on top of me. We rolled together over the shattered glass and scattered papers.

We exchanged blows until our muscles began to stiffen and our strength was completely depleted. In the end, we lay on our backs, side by side, our ragged breathing the only sound filling the room, while our wounds bled quietly onto the carpet.

We lay there amidst the wreckage. I felt the blood boiling in my veins like lava despite the exhaustion. My partner, the friend of my years, was ready to become my enemy just like that? I gritted my teeth until I felt pain in my jaw, and said, my voice coming out like a snake’s hiss while my gaze was fixed on the ceiling: "Are you sure about this, Carlos? Do you really want us to become enemies?"

Carlos was silent for moments. I saw the corner of his eye twitching restlessly as if he were weighing his words on a golden scale, then he said in a calm but charged tone while staring into the void: "I don’t want this, Robert, but you are the one putting me before this difficult choice."

I took a heavy breath that hurt my shattered ribs and said: "Because you refuse the mere idea of staying away from Julie!"

He replied, trying to adjust his head to see my reaction: "And do you really want to antagonize me over a girl? Do you sell years of work and blood in the blink of an eye?"

Despite the fires consuming my heart because of Julie, Carlos’s words touched a sensitive nerve; he wasn’t just a partner, he was the person who knew all my secrets. I said bitterly, closing my eyes: "I’ll be honest, Carlos... you are my friend, and it would be cruel for me to forget everything between us."

He said, leaning his exhausted body toward me slightly: "Then why do you draw the sword of enmity in my face every time you see me? You know your place with me, Robert."

I answered in a hoarse voice: "Because I don’t want to lose you! I’m just trying to stop you from committing the folly of approaching Julie."

Here, Carlos lowered his head while still lying down, his features masked with a tinge of regret mixed with determination, and he uttered words that fell like a thunderbolt: "I just confessed to her that I like her... and I promised to get her out of here."

I didn’t process the sentence immediately; I felt a blur in my vision. I sprang up despite the pain and grabbed his shirt collar with both hands while crouching over him, screaming at the top of my lungs: "What did you do?!"

He said, trying to breathe while blood stained his collar: "I got carried away by my feelings, Robert! I thought about smuggling her out because you blocked all paths in my face!"

I shouted in shock, my body trembling violently: "And you betray me for her?!"

He replied, grabbing my wrists to ease the pressure on his neck: "Didn’t you come and hit me in my home? Didn’t you threaten me with enmity? What did you expect me to do while the blood was boiling in my veins?"

I said angrily, tightening my grip on the fabric of his shirt: "I expected your mind to return to your head, not for you to plot behind my back like a coward!"

He said in a broken tone, stopping his resistance: "I regret it, Robert... and here I am, confessing everything to you now."

I let go of his collar in disgust and went back to lying beside him, wiping my face with my trembling hand: "I can’t believe you started acting with this insane speed."
