Chapter 169
Max’s Point of View
A sharp ringing echoed in my ears. Did she really just say Marcus was my "boyfriend"? I couldn’t believe Julie would utter such a lie so casually, without any regard for the sheer humiliation it would cause me.
I stood rooted to the spot, the towel nearly slipping from my hand, while Robert responded in a tone thick with bewilderment and suspicion.
"Marcus and Max?"
"Yes," Julie replied with an uncanny steadiness. "And they don’t want anyone to find out."
Well done, Julie, I thought bitterly. Keep going... you’ve officially forced me into a secret relationship with Marcus!
Robert swept his burning gaze over us before directing his words at Julie. "And you? What are you doing in the room with them? What business is it of yours?"
That was a good question, Robert. I waited to see Julie struggle to invent another lie, hoping she’d feel even a fraction of the mess she’d dragged me into. But she looked at the prone Marcus and said, "He’s unconscious, and I came to see him."
My eyes widened. Did she just tell him he was unconscious? How on earth was she going to explain that now?
"And what happened to make him lose consciousness?" Robert asked sharply, stepping toward the bed.
Julie lowered her voice and feigned embarrassment. "I can’t say... it’s shameful."
My body stiffened. What was this madwoman about to blurt out? "What?" Robert barked with dwindling patience. "Speak up! Don’t be shy!"
Julie glanced at me for a split second, then quickly averted her eyes toward the wall. She said with a boldness that shocked me, "It’s... I mean, when they were doing that thing... Marcus fainted."
I swear to God, Julie, I’m going to kill you! The blood froze in my veins as a wave of shame washed over me. I didn’t know what to say or how to defend myself.
So, not only am I gay now, but I’m apparently some kind of savage who makes Marcus pass out? Why? Am I a dinosaur?!
"Julie, why are you even here?" Robert replied coldly, waving a dismissive hand. "I don’t care if Marcus faints or dies."
Julie rushed toward him. "People’s lives matter! If you don’t care, I do!"
"Max and his ’boyfriend’..." Robert growled, closing in on her and trapping her with his gaze. "What does that have to do with you? What is your business in this?!"
Exactly... my "boyfriend" Marcus, who is about to wake up and discover he’s apparently as gay as I am!
"What is it to you?" Julie challenged. "Why do you care where I go or where I am?"
There it was... the play was complete, and we were about to witness the jealousy that everyone sees except her. "Get out of here and go up to your room," Robert said, pointing to the door.
Julie defied him. "I won’t! I want to make sure Marcus is okay."
"He fainted from the sex!" Robert snapped with biting sarcasm. "What are you going to do for him?"
Did he actually say "sex"? And at that critical moment, Marcus began to stir. He raised his head with difficulty, groaning, as we all watched him in grim silence. I saw the terror in Julie’s eyes, fearing our cover would be blown.
Marcus rubbed his head with his hand and said in a daze, "What happened?"
"Marcus... I didn’t expect this from you," Robert said in a mocking tone, studying him. "You’ve truly surprised me."
"Stop it, please!" Julie interrupted frantically.
"Where am I?" Marcus asked, lost as he looked around. Then he looked at me coldly and asked, "Who are you?"
Julie shouted quickly to save the situation. "What’s wrong with you, Marcus? This is your boyfriend, Max!"
Marcus froze in his place, responding in shock, "What are you talking about, Julie? Have you gone mad?"
Robert turned sharply toward us. "What is going on here, Julie?"
"He must have..." Julie replied in desperation, trying to convince us all. "He must have lost his memory!"
