Chapter 356
Julie’s Point of View
I froze in my place with absolute rigidity and a sudden violence that completely paralyzed my limbs, so much so that the gasping words cracked and hardened like sharp glass shards in the tract of my dry throat. I felt as though my saliva had entirely vanished, evaporating into nothingness as I deeply contemplated the stony contours of his face, which remained frozen and devoid of any human emotion.
His thin lips moved once more with a calculated, provocative slowness, curving into a withered, frost-bitten smile. He spoke in a mocking, low tone that overflowed with a muffled relish of my misery: "What is the matter, my dear Julie? Why has this sudden paleness blanketed your face? Won’t you greet your Uncle Thomas and clear the path for him?"
I drew a deep breath that burned my chest, desperately urging the cells of my shocked mind to awaken and break free from the abyss of surprise. I gripped the edge of the wooden door with my slender fingers, channeling every ounce of malice and strength I possessed to gather my scattered courage and pride before this phantom straight out of my nightmares.
I delivered in a tone I fought violently to keep stable: "Welcome... please step inside. I am not one to shut doors in the faces of the helpless."
His features shifted into a deep dissatisfaction. He extended his hand, pressing his fingers down on the small control button fixed to the armrest of his black wheelchair. The electric motor emitted a faint, rhythmic mechanical hiss as the wheels glided smoothly and quietly, carrying him over the threshold of the house.
I pulled the door with force and slammed it shut behind him, creating a resounding thud that echoed through the space. I trailed behind him with slow, cautious, and anticipating strides toward the drawing room, slicing through the heavy silence with a sharp, blade-like tone: "Tell me honestly... how on earth did you locate my place and discover my home?"
He brought his automated chair to a halt dead in the center of the drawing room. He turned his head with an agonizing slowness to pierce me with those dark, pitch-black eyes that had long overflowed with conspiracies, stating with a provocative serenity: "It is exceptionally easy to find you and track your steps, my dear Julie... effortlessly simple in a way your mind genuinely cannot fathom. The world is significantly smaller than you think."
The muscles of my stomach constricted with deep apprehension and terror. I took an aggressive step toward his chair, demanding sharply: "Does... does Robert know of my presence here in this village? Did you inform him?"
He twisted his mouth in cold relief and a hidden mockery of my anxiety, waving his hand carelessly through the air as he stated: "Of course he knows absolutely nothing of this. I am not stupid enough to return him to the pit of your madness."
In that fleeting second, a gasping, warm breath escaped my trembling lips. This honest declaration from his mouth was sufficient to soothe my hammering heart and quiet its frantic rebellion, if only for a brief moment. I knew Thomas’s nature with absolute precision; I understood perfectly well that he had been utilizing every ounce of his strength and influence to distance and deprive me of Robert from the very first moment his eyes laid sight on me in that cursed club.
He swept his gaze in a calculating, meticulous inspection across the corners of the modest, warm drawing room, taking in its simple furniture. He continued in an ambiguous tone that carried a blend of disdain and bewilderment: "I see you have settled down and rapidly adapted to a pathetic existence in this small, isolated village, far removed from the city lights and its chaotic din."
I crossed my arms over my chest in a defiant, rigid stance, cutting off his train of thought with a decisive tone: "Leave the state of my life aside for now, and tell me clearly: what exactly brought you here?"
He let out a deep sigh, placing his palms heavily flat against the leather armrests of his chair, stating calmly: "I merely wished to see you. Have you not missed seeing your uncle throughout this lengthy absence?"
I twisted my lips into a scathing scoff, killing his gaze with my detachment as I stated mockingly: "Amusing, truly. It never pleased you in the slightest when I used to address you as ’Uncle Thomas’ in the past... I distinctly recall that you utterly loathed hearing that word from my mouth, just as you detest my very existence in this world and hate me personally for a reason I do not know."
He locked the wheels of his chair by engaging the brakes, looking straight into the absolute depths of my dark pupils to anchor his vision. He stated in a calm voice entirely devoid of any emotional outburst: "My dear Julie... do not misunderstand me or twist my words in a warped manner that serves your malice. I do not hate you as a person in any shape or form. I never have."
My left eyebrow twitched in blatant derision. I let out a low chuckle, stating: "Mmm... perfectly clear, indeed. Your words bear immense witness to the absolute overflow of your profound affection!"
He adjusted his posture with a noticeable strain and exhaustion that printed itself across his spent features, continuing with a severe gravity that shifted the entire course of the conversation: "I am entirely sincere in every single syllable my tongue utters. I simply do not want you anywhere near or around my son, Robert, at any cost whatsoever. I possess my own private reasons for keeping you away from him."
I took an additional step toward the center of the room, narrowing my eyes with a thick blanket of doubt and suspicion: "Private reasons?!"
He nodded his head with a slow, heavy confidence: "Precisely. And though Robert always viewed you through his blind gaze as that innocent, kind, and wronged girl who required absolute protection, I know with absolute certainty that you harbor a dark, ravenous, and cruel monster pulsing violently within you."
I let out a loud, brief, and mocking laugh to deflect his intrusion into my psyche, staring at the contours of his face as I stated in a blatant challenge: "And have you suddenly transformed into a sorcerer, an astrologer, and a fortuneteller now, capable of penetrating secrets and knowing the internal souls and hidden depths of human beings?"
His lips shifted into a lifeless smile, the wrinkles deepening around his mouth: "I am no fortuneteller, Julie... but I possess a wealth of years of experience and dealing with diverse kinds of human beings that is more than sufficient to qualify me to read that evil with absolute clarity, merely by catching a passing glimpse of the rebellious glint in your eyes."
I stated in a mocking tone, arching my eyebrow: "Mmm... mesmerizing, truly."
