Chapter 406
Julie’s POV
His words dropped into the quiet space of the room like a localized lightning strike, instantly seizing my muscles. But what truly slashed through my ribs wasn’t just Robert it was the faint, venomous smile slowly spreading across Sarah’s lips.
She raised her head, the false, delicate submission instantly dissolving from her wide blue eyes to make way for a cold, malicious triumph. She swayed forward with calculated intent, her manicured fingers with their stark, single-tone polish trailing across the broad expanse of Robert’s chest. The loose strands of her blonde hair tumbled over her bare shoulders as she leaned her semi-clad body heavily against him.
She cast a dismissive, mocking glance in my direction, her voice dropping into a soft, dripping purr:
"Do you see now, Julie?... There are certain things women like you can never have, no matter how much you pretend to possess an ounce of pride."
My chest constricted, every muscle locking as I found myself completely unable to avert my gaze from her hands wandering over his shirt. She deliberately pressed closer against him, leaning up to whisper in his ear before pressing a light, lingering kiss directly along the sharp ridge of his jawline right in front of my eyes.
Her palm slid down, brushing against the leather of his belt as she looked back at me in blatant, unadulterated provocation. She let out a low, breathless laugh:
"I am the only one entitled to touch him like this... You’re nothing more than a spectator in the corner, for God’s sake."
A bitter, suffocating heat burned in my chest, locking the air inside my throat as I watched him stand there without pushing her away. He simply let her savor every cruel insult she threw at me, letting her prove with every passing second that I was an absolute outcast in this world that the body my soul craved was strictly forbidden to me, yet made readily available to someone else.
Scalding tears gathered at the edges of my eyes, a poisonous lump swelling in my throat that felt like a jagged blade. Every cell in my body screamed under the sheer weight of this humiliation, my conscious mind desperately trying to remind me of the living hell he had put me through in the past and what he was subjecting me to in this exact, wretched second.
Yet my traitorous heart that wretched, unfaithful organ trapped between my ribs was waging its own sick war, completely divorced from my bleeding pride.
It was consuming itself in a dark, scorching fire of jealousy, like acid poured directly over raw, open wounds. Seeing Sarah’s fingers wander over the fabric of his shirt, seeing her lips leave their mark along the skin of his wide jaw, threw my soul into a grotesque conflict. How could my mind despise this monster with every ounce of hatred it possessed, while my heart shattered with suppressed desire and bitter humiliation simply because another woman was touching the body that used to belong to me alone?
I squeezed my eyes shut, grinding my teeth together so hard my jaw throbbed, desperately trying to suffocate the dark flame burning through my core so I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of seeing me break down in front of this disgusting display.
Sarah closed whatever space remained between them, winding her slender arms boldly around his neck. She lifted her head slowly and captured his lips in a deep, unhurried kiss. Robert offered no resistance; instead, he brought his broad palm down around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. His dark eyes remained fixed on my pale face with a heavy, mocking challenge.
In that precise second, jealousy struck the very center of my foolish heart like a poisoned blade. The fire in my chest roared so violently I felt my own breath burning inside me. The sight of them tore my pride into absolute shreds, and seeing her indulge in the lips I had once known so intimately swept away whatever remaining strength I had left to endure this.
I summoned every last shred of my will, locking my jaw tight to prevent my trembling lips from betraying my internal collapse. I forced my chin up with immense effort, speaking in a sharp, steady voice that I fought with everything I had to keep entirely free of brokenness:
