My Fiancé's 'Girl' Gave Me a Buzzcut. I Gave Her a Subpoena for Their Wedding. novel Chapter 17

Chapter 9

Chapter 9

The police investigation dragged on for two weeks.

Ended with “insufficient evidence,” but they kept the shipment. Ten million down the drain.

The Hayes name was mud. Partners bailed left and right.

Stock went into free fall.

The old man had another stroke. Didn’t make it this time.

Right before he died, he grabbed Ethan’s hand, barely getting the words out:

“Save… the family…”

The boy… heir…”

Then he was gone.

The funeral was bare-bones. Hardly anyone showed up-just vultures looking for gossip.

Sarah stood there holding the baby, crying her eyes out.

Hard to tell if she was mourning the old man or her meal ticket.

Ethan’s face was stone the whole time.

Wasn’t until everyone left that he turned to Sarah: “Pack your things.”

Sarah blinked. “Excuse me?”

“You and the kid. Out of the house.”

“I’ll cut you a check. Enough for both of you to live on.”

Sarah’s voice went shrill: “Are you OUT OF YOUR MIND?!”

“I’m your sister-in-law! This is your brother’s son!”

“Your grandfather said he’s the heir!”

Ethan actually laughed-bitter as hell: “Heir to what?”

“The family’s circling the drain. What’s he gonna inherit?”

Sarah stumbled back. “You’re abandoning us?”

“I’m taking care of you.” Ethan’s voice was flat. “That’s what the money’s for.”

“But this house? I’m keeping it.”

“This place has memories of her. I’m not handing it over to anyone.”

Sarah stared at him. Then she laughed too: “Memories?”

“Stop lying to yourself, Ethan.”

“You never loved that woman. You just feel guilty.”

“She died badly, so now you can’t sleep at night.”

“If she was still alive, you’d have dumped her and married me already.”

Ethan’s face darkened. “Shut your mouth.”

“No. I won’t!”

Sarah was done playing nice:

“You only married her because her family was nobody-easy to control!”

“You TOLD me-once she had the baby, you’d divorce her!”

“Now she’s dead, which makes everything easier!”

“You should be thanking me! Thanking my son for getting rid of her!”

CRACK

The slap was brutal.

Way harder than the one he’d given Lily.

Sarah hit the floor. The baby started screaming.

Ethan looked down at her, eyes like ice: “Get out.”

“Now.”

“Show your face here again, you get nothing.”

Sarah scrambled up, clutching the crying baby, and shot him a venomous look: “You’re gonna regret this!”

Sarah left with the kid and a fifty-million-dollar check.

Ethan stood alone in the memorial hall, staring at his father’s portrait.

Suddenly felt like he couldn’t hold himself up anymore.

His knees gave out.

“Dad, I can’t do this.”

“I’m gonna lose everything you built.”

Silence.
