“You’ve been avoiding your calls from your father,” Aidan suddenly breaks the silence between us.

I glance sideways at him, surprised. “How do you know that?”

“Your reaction to your phone ringing with unknown numbers; I can see you tense up. I can also see that you have cancelled or ignored his calls,” he says, never taking his eyes off the road. “So, how long has your father been trying to contact you?”

“Since the gala, which is three months ago,” I stare out of the car window. “He must know something has changed between us; he can probably see the pictures we posted online. He most definitely knows from the internet that I am now working for you and that I am refusing to be controlled by him any longer.”

“Does he know anything about the inheritance?”

“No, I haven’t told him. I think the trust company may have attempted to contact him when I filed my claim for it, and possibly that will throw a hint to him.” I trace the patterns of the raindrops on the window with my eyes. “I am not ready to confront him yet.”

“You shouldn’t feel you have to be ready on anyone else’s terms or timeline except for your own.”

“That’s what Patricia said too.”

“Patricia is a very wise woman.” He turns down my street. “Regardless, you will eventually have to confront your father. Are you aware of this?”

“I am, and I will,” I say with a long sigh. “I just have no idea how to tell him that I am not ready to speak with him after being betrayed by him all these years.”How do you face your father and ask him why he allowed you to suffer even when he had the resources to make sure you didn’t.”

Aidan is silent for a time. Then he speaks. “Look him straight in the eye and tell him exactly how much he hurt you. Don’t try to get an answer from him. Never give him the chance to defend himself. Just let him know he lost you, for good. He did it, not you.”

There is something in his tone, I register. Pain from a long time ago. Anger from a long time ago.

“Did you do this with Mark’s dad when he ruined your family’s business?”

“I never got to, he died before I had a chance to do it.” He lowers his head, then clenches his teeth. “So I am going to do it with his son and make certain the Knight family knows what they took from me.

“And I’m part of that revenge.”

“You were.” He pulls up to my building, puts the car in park. Turns to face me. “But you’re not anymore. You’re… something else now.”

The words hang between us. Heavy. Charged.

“What am I?” I whisper.

He looks at me. Really looks at me. And for a moment, I see past the CEO mask. See something raw and real and terrifying.

“I don’t know,” he says finally. Honestly. “But you’re not just a weapon. Not anymore.”

My heart is pounding. We’re too close. The car is too small. The space between us is too charged with everything we’re not saying.

His last statement hangs heavily in the air between us.

“Aidan…”

“Go inside, Lila,” he says: his voice is rough sounding. Before we end up doing something we cannot reverse.

It’s not the first time he has said anything like this or that we have shared a moment that was close to being more than just friends!

Except tonight feels different.

It feels more delicate.

It feels more dangerous.

I step out of the door and into the cool air outside. I turn around and find him watching me with dark eyes and an irrefutable expression on his face.

“See you in a few hours.” I say.

“Get some sleep.”

“You too.”

“I will.”

But we both know that he won’t. He’ll go back to the office and work until dawn pushing himself the same way that he pushes everyone else.

I walk back into my apartment, which I decorated and furnished and own because of my mother’s kindness and my own hard work, and I take the elevator to the sixth floor.

I should shower.

I should go to sleep.

I should do all the responsible things instead, I think about Aidan going back to Storm Towers.

I think about every time over the last three months that we’ve been alone, his hand has rested for a sec too long on my waist or when he has laughed at something I have said and the rest of the room disappears. It’s weird, but I sometimes feel that Aidan thinks I’m something special when he looks at me that way.

Chapter 34

I can also tell that I’m falling for him, my boss, the man who hired me so I could help him get revenge

My phone buzzes.

I know it’s Aidan even before I look at my phone:

Sleep, that’s an order.

It makes me smile in spite of everything.

I respond with yes, sir.

Three dots appear; they disappear; they appear again. Then-

Don’t call me sir, it does things to me.

I stare at that text over and over again, reading it three times as if it were a foreign language I’m trying to

learn.

As I sit there with my fingers hovering over the keyboard, I know that I should write something that’s appropriate for a boss and an employee; something that’s safe.

Instead, I type: what kind of things?

I delete that message.

I type: sorry that was inappropriate.

I delete that message.

I type: good night Aidan.
