Chapter 62
Lila
“Hell!” Aidan spat, “How in the hell did he get here?”
There was another knock. “Lila, I need to talk to you. Lila, please. I need to…”
“Call security Aidan,” he commanded as he was walking to the door, “now.”
“Don’t open it!” I begged, but my words were in vain.
Aidan swung the door wide open.

Mark is there. And he looks destroyed. Completely destroyed. Suit wrinkled. Hair disheveled. Eyes wild.
“I need to talk to Lila, not you! Please. I just need five minutes of your time to explain…”
“You need to leave,” Aidan says. Deadly calm. “Now. Before I call the police.”
“This is her apartment,” Mark said.
“This is my property.”
“Please Lila, I need you to listen to me, I’m innocent, I’m not guilty, but I need to speak with you..please!” Mark’s voice was becoming shaky.
“Say what you want to say, but the cops will be here shortly,” I said sharply.
You destroyed me. Sent that evidence to the SEC. Ruined my life. All because you wanted her and…”
“I destroyed you?” Aidan’s laugh is cold. “You destroyed yourself. Embezzling millions. Threatening Lila. Stalking her. Building a surveillance file like some obsessed…”
“Stalking?” I interrupt. My voice sharp. “What surveillance file?”
Aidan goes very still.
Mark’s eyes go wide. “She doesn’t know? You didn’t tell her I’ve been…” He starts laughing. Unhinged. “Oh, this is perfect. You’ve been keeping secrets from her. Just like I did. We’re not so different, Storm. Both of us controlling her. Both of us…”
“Get out.” Aidan’s voice drops to barely above a whisper. Dangerous. “Get out before I throw you out.”
Elevator doors ding. Security appears, two large men in suits.
“Mr. Knight,” one says. “We need you to leave the premises.”
“I’m going.” Mark raises his hands. “I’m going. But Lila…” He looks at me one more time. “You’ll regret this. All of it. When you realize Storm is just using you like I did. When you realize…”

Mark lets himself be led away. But he looks back once. “Ask him about the surveillance file, Lila. Ask him what else he’s been hiding.”
The elevator doors close. He’s gone.
Aidan shuts the apartment door. Locks it. Stands there with his back to me.
“What surveillance file?” I ask. My voice eerily calm. “Aidan. What surveillance file?”
Aidan turns and the guilt on his face says everything to me that I need to know.
“He has been following you,” Aidan explains. “For months. Documenting everything; taking pictures; writing things about who you’ve met with; when; why you are where you are …” Aidan watches me as he trails off.
The room spins.”You knew about this?”
“Yeah I knew last night about it. I had planned on telling you but-”
“When? When was it you were just gonna tell me that my ex-husband has been following me around? That I’ve been being stalked by him for weeks now? That there are pictures of me?” My voice breaks. “Aidan is there anything else you’ve been hiding from me?”
“No,” I solemnly swear. “Just that. Just-”
“Just that my ex has been stalking me and you’ve determined it’s not worth anything for me to know?” I picked up my phone and turned it on. “I need to go. I have to think. I have to-”
“Lila please don’t go.” I hear him plead. “Not like this. Let me-”
“Let you what? Continue to hold secrets from me? Keep determining what I am allowed to know? That you…” I stop and recollect myself. “I need space to think and process what is fact, or what is not-”
My phone is blowing up with notifications. Text messages. Email after email.
But one message cuts through the noise.
I have messages from number; Want the truth? Ask Storm about Singapore. Ask him why he brought you on the trip. Ask him about the Lee Corp contract he signed that requires a “female presence” to meet optics. You were needed for optics Lila. That’s who you are. Just optics- A Friend
I can’t believe what I just read. Read it again. Then look up at Aidan.
“Is this true?” I hold my phone up. “Was the Lee Corp contract signed requiring you to have a female on your team?”
His silence is enough for me to know.
“Ohhh God.” The room is fading. “Ohhh God. Singapore. The deal. Everything. It was-you needed me for…”
