My Husband Said His Student Was More Important Than His Pregnant Wife Until I Asked for Divorce novel Chapter 42

Chapter 3

Her voice held a hint of triumph, like she’d just won a competition I hadn’t even entered.

Silence fell over the table. Finally, someone spoke up. “Wait, seriously? You’re good with that? You two have

been talking about Kingsley since sophomore year.”

I caught the smirk tugging at the corner of Sarah’s mouth. “Why should I mind? We want different lives now.”

He’d chosen Sarah. I’d chosen everything else waiting for me.

Halfway through dinner, I stepped outside to take a call. When I came back, Sean and Sarah had slid into the

seats beside me.

Sean’s face was flushed, a sure sign he’d had too much. When he spotted me, something lit in his eyes, and he leaned close enough that I could smell the whiskey on his breath.

“Look, I know this bothers you. But Sarah, come on, you know her situation. She can’t just up and leave. Her family needs her nearby, and she’s never really been on her own before.”

He paused, waiting for me to nod along. “You’d worry about her if she was here by herself, right? Besides, Sarah said we could all do a trip to Europe after graduation. We’ll make it work.”

His hand landed on my arm. “Come on. Don’t do this.”

I leaned back, reaching for my drink. “I already told you, I’m not upset. But if she can’t afford to study abroad, where’s the money for a Europe trip supposed to come from?”

The glass slipped from Sarah’s fingers and shattered on the floor.

Sarah’s lip trembled. “I know I’m not from a rich family like you, Lily. I know you think you’re better than me. But I can work for it, I’ll get a job, save up, pay my own way. Eventually.”

Her voice cracked. “So what, only people like you get to see the world? You’re just going to gatekeep travel now? I work for every dollar I have. I’m not asking for charity.”

Tears spilled over. “You don’t have to be so mean about it.”

A murmur went around the table. “That was kind of harsh… I mean, Lily’s smart and all, but she can be pretty intense. No wonder he’d go for someone sweeter.”

Tears streamed down Sarah’s face. Sean’s expression shifted from concern to something harder, colder. “Apologize to her, Lily.”

Mona shot back, “She’s the one who won’t stop talking about how broke she is. Lily’s just pointing out the

numbers don’t add up.”

“And seriously, she’s got all summer, she could be working, helping her family, doing anything. But no, she’s stuck to Sean like Velcro making vacation plans. So yeah, maybe she should explain how that works.”

Sarah’s sobs got louder. I’d seen this performance before, and the exhaustion hit me all at once.

I stood, pulling Mona with me. Sean’s hand clamped around my wrist, his voice tight, anger barely leashed. “Apologize to Sarah. Now. Or don’t bother coming back.”

His grip was tight enough to leave bruises. I peeled his fingers away one by one and met his eyes.

“Do whatever you want, Sean. Go wherever you want with her. But leave me out of it. And after tonight, don’t call me. Don’t text me. We’re done.”

I turned and walked out. Behind me, Sean stood there, frozen, his face gone white with rage.
