Chapter 4
After everything that happened, Julian was the one who texted me.
[This one’s on me. Tiffany and I got into a fight, and I said some things I shouldn’t have, I told her to get an
abortion.]
[I didn’t think she’d actually act on it and come after you like that. I’m sorry.]
[Once the baby’s here, I’ll set the record straight publicly. Just lay low for now.]
A notification for a massive wire transfer came through right after.
My knuckles went white on my phone.
Because of a fight between the two of them, I’d lost my reputation and my job.
It kept replaying in my head, no matter how hard I tried to shove it away..
In the end, I just caved. I didn’t have the energy left to fight.
He didn’t love me, not really. He’d always chosen Tiffany first.
So I’d walk away and let them have each other.
I had already booked my flight and tied up all the loose ends to leave.
The only things still at the house were the prenuptial agreement and the broken pieces of my mother’s
locket.
When I got there, the house was packed.
Most of them looked about Leo’s age.
I saw the decorations on the walls, and it sank in.
Today was Leo’s birthday.
Once, I wouldn’t have forgotten. I would have spent weeks picking out the perfect gift.
Not that it mattered, Leo would’ve tossed them in the trash anyway.
I kept my head down and stuck to the edges of the room.
I just needed to get my things and go.
But Leo spotted me. For a second, his face lit up.

“Mom…”
It had been weeks since that night.
I walked past him without looking at him.
A kid across the room suddenly pointed at me.
“Isn’t that the woman from the news? My mom said she’s a homewrecker, what’s she doing here?”
“Seriously, Leo, what is she even doing here?”
Leo froze.
When he didn’t answer, they kept going.
“Wait, is she actually your mom? Are you the kid whose mom is a homewrecker?”
“She’s not my mom!”
Leo squared his shoulders, his face turning red.
Julian stepped in and grabbed my arm, pulling me aside.
“What are you doing here? It’s Leo’s birthday, do you have any idea how bad this makes us look? If you have no shame left, at least spare us the embarrassment.”
I yanked my arm free and didn’t say a word.
I grabbed what I came for and headed for the door.
I was almost at the door when something slammed into me.
A plate piled with cake slammed straight into my face.
The cake knife on the plate nicked my palm on the way down.
The pain hit all at once, sharp and sudden.
I looked up. Leo stood there, face flushed, chest heaving.
“You ruined everything! You broke up my family!”
“It’s my birthday, get out!”
The kids who had been taunting Leo froze.

Then they started clapping and cheering.
I clamped my bleeding palm against my side, my whole body shaking.
I knew Leo hated me. I just didn’t think he’d go this far.
Julian lunged forward to grab my bleeding hand.
I stepped back.
“You’re right.” My voice came out rough.
“I’m not your wife. He’s not my son. And this is not my home.”
The five years were over. I didn’t want custody of Leo anymore, and I didn’t want the marriage anymore.
I was completely done.
