Chapter 10
Early the next day, a former colleague messaged me.
She told me Charles had been in a severe car accident, critical injuries, nearly fatal.
A passerby had rushed him to the hospital just in time.
What shocked me was what came after.
When Charles woke up, he reportedly stared blankly at the ceiling for a long time. Then the first thing he did was press charges against Madeline.
Only later did I learn the truth. The night he rushed off, he’d received a distress call from her.
But when he arrived, Madeline dropped the act. She had planned to kill him, to stage it as an accident and collect his life insurance payout.
By sheer luck, someone happened to pass by. That was the only reason Charles survived.
This time, I believed he finally saw her for who she truly was.
In court, he was unrecognizable. Cold. Decisive.
He submitted overwhelming evidence and showed no mercy.
Madeline broke down repeatedly, sobbing and begging. He never softened.
In the end, she was convicted of attempted murder, financial fraud, and embezzlement, sentenced to decades in federal prison.
Afterward, Charles drafted a will, He transferred all remaining assets into my name.
Then, not long after, he jumped from the rooftop of a thirty-story building.
Around that same time, our research achieved another major breakthrough.
I considered things for two seconds. Then, in his name, I donated every cent to the institute.
The dead are beyond judgment.
Everything else is illusion.
