Chapter 9
Ethan stumbled, his face turning pale.
Lila, who had been shrinking in the corner of the sofa, stood up and spoke timidly.
“Uncle, don’t blame Professor Montgomery. It’s all my fault…”
“Shut up!”
Mr. Montgomery whipped around to glare at her; his eyes blazing with fury.
“Who do you think you are, talking like that?”
Lila flinched back, tears instantly welling up in her eyes.
Mr. Montgomery looked away from her and stared hard at his son..
“Tell me what do you have left? Without the Montgomerys, without the Bennetts, how much is your little
professor title worth? Who can you even support?!”
Ethan went rigid. His lips trembled, but no sound came out.
His father’s words shattered the illusion he’d carefully constructed.
He had always believed his success came from talent and hard work, that the Bennett resources were just
extra.
He even saw Chloe’s family background as a kind of restraint.
But now, his father was telling him everything he had depended on someone else.
“Go apologize to Chloe!”
Mr. Montgomery let go of him, his voice exhausted and desperate.
“Beg her! Check that ridiculous pride at the door! Otherwise, you’ll go from Professor Montgomery to a

Ethan staggered back, catching himself on the wall.
He slowly turned toward Lila on the sofa.
She had come over to help him figure things out, but now she avoided his gaze.

She spoke softly, but it was the final straw that broke Ethan’s resolve.
He finally realized-the woman who had once been gentle and compliant with him, the one he thought would always forgive him unconditionally… was truly done with him,
The divorce papers were delivered directly to Ethan’s department office.
I heard he tore them up on the spot.
The next day, new papers-along with a court summons-were delivered to his father.
Mr. Montgomery personally dragged him to the hospital to see me.
Half a month had passed, and Ethan had lost a shocking amount of weight.
“Chloe… I’ve brought Ethan to apologize to your mother.”
Mom leaned against the headboard, eyes closed, ignoring him completely.
I cut the peeled apple into small pieces and placed them in a bowl, not lifting my head.
Mr. Montgomery shot his son a fierce look.
Ethan took a step forward and bowed deeply toward the bed.
“Mom, I’m sorry. I was out of line. I said things I shouldn’t have, did things I shouldn’t have. Please forgive
me…”
“Don’t call me Mom. I don’t deserve that title.”
Ethan froze.
Mr. Montgomery quickly stepped in to smooth things over.
“Chloe’s mom, everything is this unfilial boy’s fault! I brought him here today to take whatever anger you need to let out! Please, for the sake of our families’ past ties, and for the baby in Chloe’s stomach… give him one more chance!”
He pulled a document out of his bag and handed it to me.
“Chloe, this is a share transfer agreement. I’m transferring 15% of Montgomery Group to you. It’s my apology for this worthless son. Let’s talk about the divorce, okay?”
I glanced at the paper but didn’t take it.
I set down the fruit knife and wiped my ‘hands clean.
