My Husband’s “Work Wife” Is Just a SISTER? Let Me Teach Her How Family Trees Work novel Chapter 17

Chapter 8

Ever since Jasper showed up with the paternity test, he’d been popping up constantly.

Sometimes I’d see him downstairs; other times he’d be waiting at the preschool gate waiting there with me.

He kept his distance-not too close, but never far-just following quietly in the background.

But I knew this wasn’t Jasper’s usual style.

That afternoon, I finished work and was about to head out when my phone rang. It was Lily’s teacher.

“Ms. Bennett, Lily was picked up today by her grandmother. Were you aware of this?”

I froze, my blood rushing to my head.

The teacher quickly explained, “A group came to the school this afternoon. The principal personally greeted them. They asked for Lily by name and… they showed a paternity test.

I clenched my fists, forcing down the anger burning in my chest.

I hung up and rushed out the door.

At the Vanderbilt estate, Jasper was leaning back on the sofa, a small, quiet girl sitting

beside him.

He was already considering how to approach Chloe about Lily’s custody when his mother pulled this dramatic stunt.

By now, Chloe would definitely know.

He pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a headache coming on.

Eleanor Vanderbilt was gazing at her granddaughter with a fond smile, thinking she was the sweetest thing ever.

This child had to be brought into the family-a Vanderbilt bloodline will never be raised

outside this family.

Lily sat quietly. When spoken to, she’d glance up but wouldn’t say a word.

Most of the time, she just stared at her shoes until a shadow fell over her.

She looked up to see a glamorous, well-dressed woman.

Blair held out a small cupcake. “Here, have some.”

Lily shook her head and spoke her first words since arriving.

“Mommy says I’m allergic to cream. I can’t eat cake.”

Blair smiled warmly. “She’s just telling you that. Your daddy isn’t allergic, so you won’t be either.”

Then she leaned closer and whispered, low enough for only Lily to hear, “She’s just too poor to buy you cake, so she lied. But now you’re with the Vanderbilts, you can have

anything you want. You have your daddy and grandma… and soon, a new mommy too.”

Her voice was soft; to anyone else in the room, it looked like she was just chatting and laughing with the kid.

That was the scene that greeted me when I rushed into the Vanderbilt home.

Eleanor sat upright on the sofa. Jasper sat with his legs crossed, his dark eyes lowered,

unreadable.

Blair held Lily in her arms, smiling gently.

To an outsider, it would have looked like a happy family.

The moment Lily saw me, she ran toward me her pink little cheeks finally softening with relief.

“Mommy!”

As she called out, every eye in the room turned to me.
