My Mate Chose My Best Friend, So His Uncle Claimed Me novel Chapter 21

Days had passed by, and it felt like a blur.

Just when I thought

Redmund and Lilith wo Would be peaceful now in the camp, news traveled fast that

now officially engaged. They were celebrating it in the troopsdining hall, and many of their colleagues were congratulating them while I was at a distance, watching them being happy together.

I cannot believe there will be another engagement party happening soon!It was Cerys, clasping her hands together as she looked in their way. We were dining together along with my former colleagues as I promised to them that would visit them every Friday. Oh, to be romantically in love with someoneI envy them, Ms. Euphyllia. I want to meet my mateShe fluttered her eyelids at me.

I almost smiled bitterly at her statement. Even though I had braced myself for it since I saw Lilith on that day that she was wearing a ring, the confirmation still carved a hollow ache in my chest.

I told myself that I shouldn’t care. I told myself that their betrayal no longer hurt. But every time I would hear their names together, the people around them made it sound like they were perfect match together. And that, they were fitted as the one Moon Goddess should be fated to one another.

You will meet your mate soon, Cerys.I gently patted her head. In hopes, you wouldn’t get betrayed like what happened to me. I wished to add.

Meanwhile, Lucretius had been busier than ever. Messages and scrolls kept arriving endlessly, generals and emissaries coming back and forth without a pause.

The war in Auritaurie had become demanding that his presence be at every turn, and even though he rarely showed his exhaustion, I knew that he could still feel tired.

Even the commander I idolized, Rachelle Simon, was becoming uneasy every time the rogues were able to come up with some plans to destroy few of our fleets. And that she didn’t manage to listen to the present superior in the Auritaurie camp.

One morning, I went to his study room only to find that he wasn’t there, which felt bizarre because every time I came here, Lucretius always arrived before me. He was always punctual, 1 could say.

I happened to meet Lieutenant Leofrick in the hall. Commander Lucretius won’t be attending to his duties today,he said, his voice firm yet there was a hint of concern.

My brows furrowed. Why? Did something happen?

He’s ill. Burned himself out again. He heaved out a sigh. He sounded like this happened often, and Lucretius was a hardheaded person. He’s in his private quarters. He won’t admit it, but he needs plenty of rest today.

That surprised me, making my chest tightened. Lucretius being sick? It almost sounded Impossible.

This was my first time to know that Lucretius would be like this. I knew his bad reputation, but it didn’t occur to me that he could be stubborn sometimes.

I should have known that he would be sick soon, given how he had gone busy these past few days. But he was so good at being composed that I failed to notice that he was unwell.

And yet, tomorrow was his birthday. As far as I knew, the preparation for his grand celebration was doing well. He would celebrate his birthday first here in the camp, and the grand celebration was going to happen the day after its birthday. However, unbeknownst to his soldiers and pack members, he was confined to his bed.

I will go see him,I said, without a second thought.

Leofrick’s eyes widened before creasing his forehead. He crossed his arms over his chest, standing tall and firm. That won’t be possible, Ms. Euphyllia. Commander gave strict orders not to be disturbed.

I am not disturbinghim,I argued, my voice steady though my palms had begun to sweat. I am his assistant. If he is ill, then, it is my duty to check on him, to see if he needs anything.

Yes, to see if he needed anythingThat was my only purpose.

His eyes squinted. His private quarters are not for anyone to enter. Not even I can go in unless summoned.

Then, summon me,I implied, my gaze didn’t falter. And I could tell that my behavior slightly surprised him, given how I had been bolder than he expected. If he collapses, if his situation grows worse, will you bear the consequences of keeping me away when I could’ve helped?

And I had conscience. It wouldn’t be right to me that I would be sitting behind my desk while my commander was alone and no one was taking care of him.

And I was his fiancée. I wouldn’t like to see my husbandtobe in a sick situation.

Leofrick’s lips parted and then pressed into a thin line. I could almost hear him arguing to himself because he knew that I had a point. I knew that he was Lucretiusever loyal shadow in his unit, despite the fact that they were both Alphas from their own packs.

Finally, he exhaled slowly, his hand massaging his temple as if my stubbornness bestowed him a headache.

You’re reckless, just like him,he muttered, almost to himself. Then, his eyes darted to me. Fine. I shall allow it. But if he tells you to leave, you shall obey. Understand?

I nodded quickly, relief rushing through me. Roger that.

What if someone heard me outside because of what he did?

Would he take accountability for our situation here? He would just ruin our plans!

But the devil himself looked satisfied at the outcome of his antic. And I just glared. praying that if looks could kill, he would be a dead meat by now.

However, he was still breathing.
