Chapter 31: Two Dresses

“That freaking brat said that to me?” Lucretius asked through gritted teeth when I told him the message from Commander Rachelle as soon as I arrived. “She has a mouth on her. Tell her I appreciate the concern for my mobility.”

I pressed my lips into a thin line to suppress the smile that was about to show on my face. Now, I could understand why Commander Rachelle was able to provoke him.

Lucretius disliked being called an old man.

“What are you smiling about?” he asked, one brow climbing.

I froze, gulping, and opened my mouth. “Nothing,” I lied clumsily. I was about to add another word, but then we were interrupted when the door opened and Horace stepped in, carrying two boxes.

“The dresses have arrived, Alpha,” he reported after bowing his head.

Lucretius‘ expression changed and became unreadable as he nodded. “Show her,” he ordered.

My heart leaped out of my ribcage. “Dresses?” I parroted. It was finally here? I almost blurted out.

Horace carefully opened the first box and drew back the paper layers. Inside was a gown of midnight–blue taffeta. Its bodice was cut High and modest, sleeves were up to the elbows, and the skirt, though it looked wide, lacked the heavy trims and embellishments. The gown was simple and looked breathable.

The outfit was appropriate for someone of low rank who served their master.

“This will do for the first half of the evening,” Lucretius remarked, leaning forward on his seat while his elbow rested on the armrest. “You will be known merely as my assistant. Simple, modest. It would not do to draw attention prior to my announcement.”

My hand reached for the fabric as I traced the hem. For Lucretius, it might look simple, but to me, this simplicity screamed elegance. And this dress would be a decoy for me.

It was a perfect disguise to show everyone that I was harmless, and no one would mind me. I wouldn’t easily grab someone’s attention and would just stay in the corner to observe.

“I understand.” I finally nodded.

Then Horace lifted the lid of the second box after returning the first dress to its container.

My breath hitched as the second gown was unveiled before me.

It was an ivory satin, looking so rich and luminous over the sunlight with delicate silver embroidery that climbed like vines across the bodice. Pearl beads adorned the neckline, looking so dazzling like morning dew. And the skirt had taken my breath away, too. It was vast and floor–length, and the edge was stitched with lace.

This gown had overpowered the first one. It was a gown of a lady–no, of a wife meant for the wife of a man of power

And that was enough for me to shiver.

Lucretius‘ gaze darted in my direction before focusing on the gown. “And this… is for later. You will wear it when you stand beside me. My wife and the Lama of the Golden Eclipse Pack.”

I felt like my heart froze for nanoseconds before finally looking in his direction. His facial expression was unreadable, and the ghost smile on his lips indicated something.

My eyes fixated on the second dress. I couldn’t believe my eyes that Rosemarle managed to finish the dresses that Lucretius

asked for me.

“They’re very lovely, Lucretius,” I said, my heart blossoming in surprise. “Thank you…”

Because I knew well that the prices of those gowns were costly and valuable as a commoner. But to him, it was just nothing but the same price of a dime.

This was it. Tonight would be the night I would be ruining for Redmund and Lilith.

“Yes,” Lucretius answered as he stood up, taking a stride to settle on my back. “Please me with your presence tonight, wifey. I want all of them to look at you.”

When his hands landed on my shoulders, it felt like a fuel to muster up some courage as I nodded, agreeing with him.

Then, his chin rested on my shoulder, holding my breath. “Horace, bring her gowns to her chamber.”

“Yes, Alpha.” Horace nodded. “Shall I have the seamstress make any minor adjustments for later, Alpha? Luna’s measurements

Lucretius cut him off with a hand, dismissing him. “Ensure my wife is comfortable. Not to constrain, but she must be able to

move.”

“Understood.” With that, he left with the boxes.

When we were alone, I was about to take a step to get away from his hold so I could retire and before he could tease me again, but Lucretius, as fast as a lightning bolt, snaked his arms from behind me.

I held my breath after that.

“And you, my dear wife, are staying in the guest wing until I summon you. You are not going to meet them yet. I don’t want you revealing more than is necessary,” he whispered, his nose rubbing on the shell of my ear. “Understand?”

I slowly heaved out a sigh, calming my heart from the proximity of our bodies. But I managed to nod, understanding what he

meant.

“Can… Can I retire now?” I asked, my hands resting on his arms. I was holding them when my knees felt weak.

Not this again… I let myself be locked inside his arms!

The warmth of his body penetrating my back brought shudders to me. For some reason, my body was responding to the way he was touching me.

“Retiring soon? Don’t you want to be with me first?” he whispered through my skin. His lips were trailing down the slenderness of my neck, causing me to close my eyes in submission.

“But… You still have things to do…” I was trying my best to answer as much as I could, but my body was already burning with

desire.

I knew it! I fell for his trap! Now, it was hard to push him away because my body liked being held by him!

I shut my eyes when Lucretius began to suck the crook of my neck as I bit my lower lip to cease myself from moaning. He was like a vampire, sucking blood from his victim, and any moment, my legs would give way.

We stayed like that in that position, as I was also unable to move from his tight hold. I let him be satisfied with what he wanted

I glared at him but nodded obediently. Deep inside, disappointment lingered when I walked out of his study room. A part of me wanted us to do something, but a part of me scolded myself for being so absurd.

But before I closed the door, I caught Lucretius cussing under his breath and muttered, “I need a cold shower. Fuck…”

I walked back to my chamber and made sure that I didn’t cross paths with Redmund and Lilith. Once I arrived, silence enveloped me like a heavy velvet curtain.

My eyes nestled on the two boxes sitting on my bed. I open their lid boxes and run my fingers over their fabrics. My breath became uneven at their sight. They were so beautiful that I couldn’t take my eyes off them.

A wife to Lucretius. A Luna.

Two roles. Two responsibilities.

I sat at the edge of the bed, clutching my knees. “One night to fool them,” I whispered to myself. “One night to ruin them.”

Confidence might have overcome me, but as I said it, my stomach twisted.

I would be seeing Redmund and Lilith later. I had been told they had settled in the west wing, where Redmund’s chamber was located. He even requested to settle Lilith’s chamber near his.

They might be far from me, but not far enough.

I would let them taste what it meant to be betrayed, especially Redmund. I would take what was supposed to belong to him.

I would make sure that he would never get the Alpha role he had been longing to inherit.

Later that day, all I did was rest in my chamber while the manor outside had already done with the preparations. From the faint sounds reaching my window, I could already hear some footsteps settling in the manor and outside at the same time.

I lay on the bed for a while, staring at the ceiling. My heart won’t stop pounding so fast because the revelation would happen

later.

Not long after, Horace returned. This time, he summoned four handfuls of trusted maids to ensure no word would escape to everyone that their Alpha and I were already married.

Their bows were polite and cautious, as if they knew that what would be happening tonight would be a blast to everyone. “Luna,” one of them greeted softly. But the greeting was only a whisper as if it was forbidden until Lucretius himself declared it. They began at once, moving with efficiency. One of them arranged the dresses by the wardrobe while the other prepared the basin for washing, the scent of lavender filling the room. And the other two were carefully laying out the necessary accessories I would be using for the first and second dresses.

“Please don’t go out until Alpha summons you. Then, you will wear the ivory gown until the appointed hour,” he instructed. ” So, I will have them station here for the time being.”

I nodded, gulping. “I understand.”
