I watched him hold her and I quickly realized that I didn’t know the true depth of their relationship.
I assumed they’d fucked once and moved on, but it was clear that something was going on behind the scenes and I was blissfully unaware. They looked so… perfect like that. He held her tightly, his lips brushing against her temple as he whispered words I couldn’t make out, and she… I’d never seen Scarlett look so vulnerable with anyone.
“What are you doing out here?” Kai asked, forcing me to look away from them. “I got you a drink.”
Sure enough, there was a can in his hands. It was some orange drink, but I didn’t care about it anymore. He walked over to me and when he saw them, I watched his expression carefully. Kai was not the overbearing older brother type, but he cared for Scarlett.
“What happened?” he asked. “And don’t tell me you don’t know because you wouldn’t be standing here if you didn’t.”
I swallowed deeply, wondering if it was my story to tell.
“Daisy,” he probed and I sighed.
“She was pregnant. It was his.”
For a minute, he went deathly still. I held my breath, waiting for the inevitable explosion, but it never came. He just hummed, staring intently.
“I hate that it took them a tragedy to finally get their act right,” he said finally. “But it’s better than nothing. Come on.”
I blinked up at him. “That’s it?”
He laughed softly. “What did you expect me to say, Daisy? Did you think I was going to get in there and be pissed at him? They’re going through enough as it is.”
“You’re acting very calm and collected about this. You didn’t even know they’d fucked a year ago.”
He shrugged. “That’s true, but after you mentioned it, I started watching. He came into the pack a month ago and he didn’t tell me. Someone said they saw him leaving her house. It was always fucking obvious, Daisy. They’re both adults, and I like that they make each other happy.”
I glanced back at them. Both their eyes were shut, and I saw a small tear trail down Damien’s cheek. I’d never seen him cry. I didn’t even know that he was capable of the emotion.
I looked away sharply, suddenly feeling like I was intruding.
“They’ll be okay, right?” I asked and Kai nodded slowly.
“They have to be.”

We didn’t say anything on the drive back home.

I tried to put Damien and Scarlett out of my mind, but I couldn’t help but wonder how they’d deal with everything. She was in the Northern pack now. Would Kai let both of them go? Damien wasn’t just his friend, he was his Beta. He kept the pack from falling apart. Leaving him to be Alpha of another pack would shake the foundations of ours.
I thought about bringing it up to Kai but I figured he’d already thought about it. He was too smart not to.
It wasn’t until we drove past the pack house that I realized we were going home.
“It feels weird,” I said suddenly.
Kai glanced at me out of the corner of his eye. “What does?”
I shrugged. “Everything. Roger is dead, just like that.”
“If it makes you feel any better, his hunters still exist. We don’t know how many he had and where their bases are, but at least we don’t have to worry about it for now. The other packs are keeping an eye out for hunter activity and they’ll regularly share information about crimes with me.”
That was a good development considering that the only reason the hunters were able to get away with things for so long was due to a lack of communication between the packs.
“I take it they weren’t pleased about it,” I murmured and Kai laughed.
“You have no fucking idea. Loran vehemently refused.”
“And Phineas?” I asked.
“Phineas has never really cared about diplomacy. It’s not his strong suit. He agreed to do whatever the others voted on. Jordan was the only one who agreed.”
“There’s something off about Jordan,” I told Kai who hummed in agreement. “He’s not like the others.”
“Every Alpha is different.”
“No, you don’t understand. He’s not like an Alpha. He… reminds me of you actually.”
“A lycan?” he asked and I nodded.
“I know I’m probably reading into things-”
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned, Daisy, it’s that nothing is too far-fetched. I’ll look into him and see what I can find. We have a bit of extra time on our hands before that little one graces the world.”
My cheeks warmed when he mentioned our baby. It felt good to not have to hide it from him.
He reached over, resting a hand atop my stomach. My insides erupted like a fucking zoo and I lay my hand
over his.

For a moment, I allowed myself the grace to just exist in that sphere. It barely lasted a minute before the thoughts started to come.
