My Milf Conqueror System novel Chapter 22

Chapter 22: Life was complicated. Dangerous. Insane.

The ride back to Sofia’s penthouse was a blur of city lights and Sofia’s triumphant laughter. She was buzzing with adrenaline, recounting every subtle dig she’d landed on her rivals, every impressed look from the board members.

"Did you see Thorne’s face when you mentioned the yen?" she asked, resting her hand on my knee. "He looked like he swallowed a lemon. God, that was satisfying."

I forced a smile, covering her hand with mine. "He deserved it."

"He did," she agreed, leaning her head back against the leather seat. "You were perfect tonight, Jake. Absolutely perfect."

Perfect.

The word tasted like ash. I looked out the window, my reflection ghostly in the glass. I wasn’t perfect. I was a guy who had just been caught in a massive lie by the one person on campus I was actually starting to trust.

Claire hadn’t looked angry. She had looked... disappointed. Like she finally saw the real me, and she didn’t like it.

"Jake?" Sofia’s voice was softer now. "You’re quiet. Is everything okay?"

I looked at her. The most powerful woman in the city, looking at me with genuine concern. If I told her a student had made us, she’d handle it. She’d have NDAs drafted by morning. She might even have Claire fired from the catering company.

I couldn’t let that happen.

"Just tired," I lied, squeezing her hand. "It’s a lot of social engineering for one night."

She softened, her eyes warm. "I know. I forget sometimes that you’re not... used to this. Let’s get you home. Or... my home."

"Your home sounds better."

...

I didn’t sleep well. I woke up before dawn, untangling myself from the sheets while Sofia slept deeply beside me. I dressed in the dark, the silence of the penthouse pressing in on me.

I checked my phone. No texts from Claire. No posts on The Chirp.

Silence was worse than screaming. Silence meant she was thinking.

I left a note on the nightstand—Early class. You were amazing last night. - J, and slipped out.

The System pinged as I hit the street.

[Mission Update: Crisis Management]

[Target: Claire Montgomery]

[Status: Knowledgeable / Unpredictable]

[Objective: Secure Silence]

[Reward: Loyalty / Risk: Exposure]

I didn’t need a reward. I just needed to fix this.

I found her in the campus coffee shop. She wasn’t working; she was sitting in a back corner, a textbook open but unread in front of her. She looked tired, like she hadn’t slept either.

I bought two coffees—black for me, vanilla latte for her (I remembered from our study session)—and walked over.

She saw me coming. She didn’t pack up. She didn’t run. She just watched me approach with a guarded expression.

I set the latte down in front of her.

"Peace offering," I said.

She looked at the cup, then up at me. "I don’t want your coffee, Jake."

"Okay," I said, sitting down opposite her. "Then just take the explanation."

"Explanation?" She let out a short, humorless laugh. "For what? That you’re dating Sofia Aldridge? That you lied to everyone? That you pretended to be some... struggling student while you’re out at the Met Gala wearing a tux that costs more than my tuition?"

Her voice rose slightly. A few heads turned.

"Lower your voice," I said gently. "Please."

She glared at me, but she leaned in, dropping her volume to a hiss. "I was working coat check, Jake. I was taking coats from people who wouldn’t look me in the eye. And then you walk in. With her."

"I saw you," I admitted.

"Yeah. You saw me. And you kept walking."

"I had to."

"Why? Because I’m not important enough?"

"No," I said, leaning forward. "Because if I acknowledged you, if I stopped... people would have asked questions. They would have looked at you. And then they would have looked at me. And the lie would have fallen apart right there."

"The lie," she repeated. "The ’consultant’ thing."

"It’s not entirely a lie. I do help her. With numbers. With strategy."

"And the rest?" She raised an eyebrow. "The way she was holding your arm? Is that part of the consulting package?"

I looked her in the eye. I couldn’t spin this. Not with her.

"No," I said quietly. "That part is real."

Claire stared at me. The anger in her eyes softened, replaced by confusion.

"She’s... she’s Sofia Aldridge, Jake. She’s in a different stratosphere. What are you doing?"

"I don’t know," I confessed. "Falling, maybe."
