Chapter 231: The Shield

[Jake’s POV]

The transition of power in the Outer Harbour was complete.

I could feel it in the way the air sat in the room.

The penthouse was quiet. Not the tense quiet from before. This was a different kind. The quiet that comes after a storm, when the rain has stopped and everything is still dripping.

I sat at the marble dining table in the Golden Koi suite. The marble was cold under my forearms. It leached the heat out of my skin. The latest financial reports from the Jade Palace were spread out in front of me. Pages and pages of them.

The paper was smooth. The ink smelled faintly chemical. Every column of numbers was black and neat.

The laundering operation was running flawlessly.

Vivian Chau was processing our street-level cash and returning it as clean, legitimate casino revenue. Chips. Slots. Baccarat tables. It all came back to us washed. The Golden Koi’s war chest was growing exponentially every day. I could see it. The numbers at the bottom of each page kept climbing.

Li sat across from me.

She wasn’t looking at the reports. She had a local newspaper open. She turned a page. The paper made a soft crinkling sound. It was the only sound in the room besides the AC.

Morning light came through the floor-to-ceiling windows in a wide, gold rectangle. It fell across the table and made the marble glow. It was warm on my arms. Outside, the city was already loud. Distant traffic. A ship horn from the harbor, low and drawn out.

"It’s on the front page," Li said. She slid the paper across the table to me.

The newspaper was cool against my fingers.

The headline was bold. Black ink on white.

*MASSIVE POLICE RAID SEIZES $2M IN CONTRABAND*

*CHIEF SUPERINTENDENT CHO LEADS OPERATION IN NORTHERN DISTRICT*

Below it was a photo. Blurry from the press but clear enough. Flashing blue and red lights cutting through early morning fog. Cops in tactical gear dragging wooden crates out of a warehouse. Men in handcuffs sitting on the curb with their heads down, faces hidden.

The warehouse was in the northern district. Territory controlled by Lin and the Iron Fists.

I could smell the ink from the photo.

"She moves fast," Li noted. A faint smile touched her lips. It didn’t reach her eyes. "Lin will be furious. He lost a major shipment, and he cannot retaliate against the police without drawing the attention of the Empress."

I set the financial reports aside. The stack made a soft slap against the marble.

"Cho is highly motivated," I said. "We cleared her brother’s debt yesterday afternoon. The wire went through at 8:04 AM."

The confirmation was still in my head. Four million HKD. Sent. Received. Cleared.

"She knows we have the resources to destroy her," I continued. "And the capital to reward her. She’ll keep the Iron Fists off balance while we consolidate our hold on the docks."

The AC kicked on above us with a soft click. Cold air drifted down from the vents. It smelled clean. It raised goosebumps on the back of my neck.

Li looked at me. Her dark eyes were steady. There was something in them I hadn’t seen before. Not calculation. Not caution.

Respect. Quiet and profound.
