Chapter 236: The shift

[Jake’s POV]

The Golden Koi penthouse smelled like coffee and clean glass at 8 AM.

Sunlight was coming in hard through the panoramic windows. It cut across the marble dining table and made the three tablets in front of me glare.

Downtown Macau was quiet. That was wrong.

There should have been sirens. There should have been chatter on the police scanners. There should have been at least one report of a street fight now that two syndicates had collapsed overnight.

There was nothing.

Li stood by the window. Black silk blouse. Arms crossed. She hadn’t gone to bed. The dark under her eyes gave her away.

I was still in yesterday’s suit. The jacket was off. Sleeves rolled up.

In front of me: Nia’s merged reports.

Column 1: Golden Koi street revenue from the docks and transit yards.

Column 2: Vivian Chau’s Jade Palace casino laundering, now tripled with the new foot traffic.

Column 3: Mei-Ling Zhao’s real estate portfolio. Hotels. Commercial towers. Condos in Taipa and Cotai.

Alone, each one was strong. Together, the number at the bottom made my jaw tick.

We weren’t a faction anymore. We were an economy.

"Han and Lin have stopped fighting," Li said. She didn’t turn from the window. "My floor managers checked every contested block from the Outer Harbour to NAPE. Iron Fists and Jade Tigers pulled their soldiers back at 4 AM. No patrols. No lookouts. The streets are completely quiet."

"They figured it out," I said. I swiped the tablet off. The screen went black. "They spent a week burning men and money on each other. While they did that, we took the Black Lotus. Then we took the Crimson Triad. They ran the math. Individually, they can’t touch us now."

"So they will combine," Li said. She finally turned. "Han and Lin hate each other. But they hate being second more. They will call a truce. They will pool what’s left of their soldiers and hit us."

"Let them," I said. I leaned back. The chair creaked. "We hold the docks. We hold the transit yards. We hold the commercial real estate. We have the cash flow to hire ten times the mercs they can afford. And we have Superintendent Cho. Any shipment they try to move, he’ll seize it for ’customs violations’. If they want to attack, they’ll have to come through our front door. And that door is reinforced."

Li walked to the table and sat down across from me. She looked at the tablets, then at me.

"You did it," she said. There was awe in her voice. And something heavier. Ownership. "You said you’d make the Golden Koi untouchable in 60 days. It’s been 38."

"We aren’t untouchable yet," I said. I kept my voice flat. "Street bosses like Han and Lin use guns. I can plan for guns. The real threat doesn’t use guns."

I reached across the table and tapped the large paper map we kept for strategy meetings. My finger landed on Coloane first. Then dragged north.

Imperial Mountain.

The green area at the center of Macau. Private. Guarded.

"Empress Song Mei," Li whispered.

"She raised your quotas last month," I said. "That wasn’t about money. That was a test. She wanted to see if the Golden Koi would crack. Bleed your vendors. Cause riots in the Outer Harbour. Give her a reason to send the Imperial Shadows in to ’restore order’."

"And instead?" Li asked.

"Instead we paid every quota. On time. In full," I said. "And while her other two Dragons were busy killing each other, we absorbed them both without a single civilian casualty hitting the news. That’s not luck. That’s precision. She’ll know I’m not one of your old captains."

Li’s expression went cold. "She will know there is a ghost in her city."

"Good," I said. "That’s the point."
