Chapter 244: The Breaking Point

[Jake’s POV]

The fire escape was a rusted iron structure clinging to the brick wall of the alleyway.

Cold air hit me the second I pushed the heavy metal door open. Humid. Wet. It smelled like rain, trash, and cordite from the first assault. The alley was dark. Total blackout. But my NVGs turned it into crisp, green clarity.

The iron groaned under my weight. Water dripped from the railings. Somewhere above, a pipe was leaking. Drip. Drip.

My NVGs picked up the heat signatures of a dozen Jade Tiger soldiers clustered near the blown rear gate.

They were huddled together for warmth and for courage. Arguing in low, angry voices. Trying to figure out how to breach the loading dock doors again after the first wave had been slaughtered in the fatal funnel. One of them was kicking the twisted metal, like that would fix it.

They had no idea I was ten feet above them.

I didn’t wait for them to formulate a plan.

I moved silently down the iron stairs. One step. Pause. Listen. The metal didn’t even creak. I stopped on the landing just above their heads. Close enough that I could hear one guy breathing through his mouth.

I pulled a flashbang from my tactical vest. The pin was cold. I pulled it. Counted one second in my head. And dropped it directly into the center of the group.

I turned my head and closed my eyes.

The detonation echoed like a thunderclap in the narrow alley.

The sound bounced off the brick walls and came back twice as loud. The flash lit the alley green even through my eyelids. The shouts of the triad soldiers turned into screams of disorientation. Cursing. Gagging. Hands slapping at faces.

I vaulted over the railing.

Ten feet down to the pavement. I landed in a crouch. The impact jarred up through my knees and into my spine. The USP was already raised.

I moved through the blinded, stumbling men with ruthless efficiency.

No shots. Shots would bring police faster.

I used the heavy steel frame of the pistol instead. A strike to the temple dropped the first man. He went down without a sound. A second guy swung wildly. I caught his wrist, broke the angle, and drove the butt of the USP into his collarbone. He dropped, clutching it.

Another lunged at me. I stepped inside, drove my knee into his thigh, and then hit him across the back of the knees. He collapsed.

Precise. Crippling strikes. Knees. Collars. Elbows. I wasn’t trying to kill them. I was trying to make sure none of them got up for the next hour.

In less than twenty seconds, the rear assault team was completely incapacitated.

Groaning on the wet asphalt. One was vomiting. Another was cradling a shattered knee and rocking back and forth. The alley smelled like blood and ozone.

"Rear alley is secure," I murmured into the comms. My voice was steady. I stepped over a man who was clutching his knee. "No fatalities. All hostiles down."

There was a pause. Then Claire’s voice, sharp.

"Noah, police sirens," she reported. "Multiple units approaching from the north and west. Fast. Cho didn’t just send a patrol car; she mobilized the riot squads. Armored vehicles. I’m seeing six trucks on thermal."

Good. Right on time.
