[Jake’s POV]
The silence from the Imperial Mountain lasted for three days.
It was an unnatural kind of quiet.
No encrypted chatter. No movement on the access roads. No eyes on the street. The Song Dynasty compound just went dark. Like someone had pulled the plug and was waiting to see what we’d do next.
During that time, the Golden Koi solidified its grip on the Outer Harbour.
The repairs to the parlor were underway. Contractors in dust masks. Hammers. The sound of saws. The jagged hole in the front was framed in new steel. The vendors paid their envelopes without complaint. They handed them over with both hands and didn’t meet anyone’s eyes.
The laundering operation at the Jade Palace processed millions in clean revenue. The books were perfect. Too perfect.
Han and Lin remained hidden in their respective territories. Licking their wounds. Avoiding the aggressive police patrols orchestrated by Superintendent Cho. You could still see the riot vehicles doing laps at night. Red and blue washing over empty streets.
It was a period of unprecedented stability for Li’s syndicate.
On the evening of the fourth day, I was in the penthouse.
Reviewing the security protocols for the newly acquired commercial properties in Taipa. Blueprints on the tablet. Camera placements. Exit routes. Li was sitting on the sofa. Reading a leather-bound ledger. The only sound was the scratch of her pen and the hum of the AC.
The heavy steel security door of the penthouse chimed softly.
One tone. Polite.
I looked up from the tablet immediately. My hand went to my side without thinking.
The perimeter alarms hadn’t triggered. Ethan hadn’t radioed from the ground floor. No forced entry. No breach.
I drew the USP from my waistband. Kept it concealed behind my leg. Walked toward the entryway. My steps were quiet on the marble.
I checked the security monitor mounted on the wall.
Standing in the hallway outside the penthouse was a single figure.
A woman. Dressed in a tailored, charcoal-gray suit. No weapon visible. Her dark hair was pulled back severely. Tight. Her face was an emotionless mask.
I recognized the posture immediately. The way she held her shoulders. The stillness.
It was the Imperial Shadow I had fought in the telecom building.
She wasn’t wearing her tactical gear or her mask. But the cold, calculating eyes were identical. She was staring straight at the camera.
"Who is it?" Li asked. She had set the ledger down. She was standing now.
"We have a visitor," I said quietly.
I pressed the release button. The heavy steel door hissed open. Air pressure equalized with a soft sigh.
The woman didn’t step inside.
She stood perfectly still in the hallway. Hands clasped behind her back. Perfect posture. She looked at me. Her gaze lingered for a fraction of a second on my right shoulder. Right where she had struck me during our fight. Right where the bruise was still yellow.
"Matriarch Bai," the woman said. Her voice was smooth. Devoid of inflection. She looked past me to Li. "I am an emissary of the Imperial Mountain."
