Zachary could evidently feel the fever burning through him. His body was unbearably hot, as if a fire raged in his chest, yet at the same time, he felt like he’d been thrown in

His eyelids grew heavier by the second as waves of exhaustion crashed over him. He bit down on his lip using the pain to force himself to stay awake.
Almost there… once we’re back at the tribe, it’ll be okay…
Animals rarely ventured out to forage during heavy snow, leaving the forest deathly silent save for the howling wind and the pounding footsteps of the black panthers.
Every so often, Matthew let out a low, rumbling whine, and in response, Zachary would weakly pinch his fur, letting him know he was still holding on.
Cold and hunger gnawed at them, but the moment they caught sight of the mountain ahead, excitement surged through the group.
We’re finally almost back at the tribe!
Zachary wasn’t familiar with the terrain here, especially not in the middle of a snowstorm at night, where everything was buried beneath endless white. But from the sounds the black panthers made, he could tell they only needed to hold on a little longer.
He licked at his cracked lips, the metallic taste of blood spreading across his tongue. The cold dulled the sensation of pain, and in his effort to stay conscious, he had already bitten his lips open in several places. The icy wind tore at them mercilessly, splitting them further until they peeled.
Because of the snow, the latter half of the night wasn’t completely dark but cast in a dull gray
haze.
Just before dawn broke, Donald and the others finally reached the edge of the tribe.
Through his hazy awareness, Zachary heard a chorus of drawn–out howls rising and falling around him- deep, rumbling sounds pulled from the throat, filled with unmistakable excitement despite their low pitch.
Black panthers had incredibly sharp hearing, especially when it came to the tribe’s distinctive calls, and it wasn’t long before Donald’s group received answering howls in return.
We’re back…
The last thread of tension holding Zachary together finally snapped. Exhaustion, cold, and pain surged back all at once. His grip on the beast–hide loosened little by little, and without realizing it, his eyes slowly slipped shut.

Therians flooded toward the center of the tribe one after another, with some sub–therians joining as well. In bad weather, the cave beside them served as a gathering place for everyone.
As soon as Matthew entered the tribe, he prepared to take Zachary straight to the shaman. But just as he lifted a forepaw, the weight on his back suddenly vanished. He whipped his head around to see Zachary- still wrapped in the beast–hide bedding–fall straight into the snow, completely motionless.
Matthew let out a low, urgent growl, nudging Zachary’s body with his head.
No response.
Jaden and Taylor leaped down from Yael’s back and rushed to Zachary’s side, frantically licking his face Their bodies trembled uncontrollably with fear and unease.
Zachary lay there with his eyes shut tight. The exposed skin of his face was flushed a frightening red, while his lips were so pale they nearly blended into the snow beneath him. No matter how his mate and cubs called out to him, he didn’t react in the slightest.
Donald roared, “Go get Mr. Bruce!”
“Matthew, take Zachary to Mr. Bruce!” Yael shouted, already sprinting toward the shaman’s home.
Matthew felt as though the blood in his body had frozen solid. It wasn’t only after hearing Donald and Yael’s voices that his stiff gaze flickered back to life.
He quickly shifted into his human form, hands trembling as he gathered Zachary into his arms and ran toward the shaman’s home.
Bruce had just gotten out of bed and was in the middle of dressing when a stream of black panthers rushed into his home.
“What happened? What’s going on? Who’s hurt?!”
Donald shifted into human form, not even bothering to dress before grabbing wood to start a fire, while Yael hurriedly set water to boil.
“Zachary-”
Before he could finish, Matthew burst in carrying Zachary, his own face no better than the unconscious man in his arms. His words tumbled out in a panic. “Zachary’s.., he’s burning up…”
Bruce immediately reached out to check Zachary’s temperature, his heart dropping.
There had been cases before–sub–therians falling ill during the cold season.
They would cough, sneeze, run fevers, sometimes even babble incoherently… but rarely had it ever been this severe. Zachary’s body felt like it had just been pulled from a fire–scalding hot–and he was completely unconscious.
Matthew held Zachary tightly, and when he saw the shaman’s expression turn grave, his body swayed. He swallowed, his voice dry and strained. “If he takes medicine… he’ll be fine, right?”
Yael and Kyle kept feeding wood into the fire nonstop, while Daniel and Ethan ran out to bring in armfuls more. Before long, the cave was filled with warmth.

Zachary lay quietly on the bed. Matthew stood stiffly beside him, gripping his hand as if afraid to let go.
Taylor crouched by the bedside, wiping away tears with the back of his hand, his voice choked. “Zachary… wake up…
Jaden stood silently nearby, neither crying nor making a fuss.
When he noticed Zachary’s collar was soaked through with cold sweat, he turned and ran home. Moments, later, he returned carrying a bundle of clean clothes.
Donald scooped up a basin of hot water and grabbed a small piece of beast–hide before heading into the inner cave. “Matthew, Mr. Bruce said you should wipe Zachary down.”
