Chapter 159 I Will Try My Best
Matthew, worried Zachary might accidentally scorch his fur, tugged the beast–hide mat a bit farther away from the fire.
Shifted a little farther from Matthew’s side, Zachary huffed softly in irritation.
Before long, the cave filled with the rich aroma of roasted duck glazed in savory sauce.
The lynx rose to his feet, trotted over, and nudged Matthew’s leg with his head. “Meow.”
“Are you hungry?” Matthew stroked him gently. “Dinner’ll be ready any minute now.”
“Meow.” The lynx let out a long, exasperated sigh.
You say you care about me, but you don’t even get what I need.
He turned away and pawed at the water jug instead. “Meow.”
Matthew glanced over. “Are you thirsty?”
The lynx gave a small nod.
Zachary preferred his water boiled, so Matthew and Jaden made sure to heat a pot every morning. Whatever was left after washing up was poured into a large stone basin.
Matthew brought a bowl over and placed it beside the mat. “Go ahead”
Drinking straight from a bowl on the ground was new for Zachary. It felt strange–especially with Matthew watching so closely.
Food was no different.
Knowing Zachary’s fastidious nature, Matthew didn’t expect him to eat with his paws or tear into anything. Instead, he carefully shredded the roasted duck into small pieces and arranged them on a plate.
The stone stool was too unstable for a lynx to sit properly, so Matthew simply lifted him onto his lap and fed him one bite at a time.
If he’d been human, Zachary would’ve been mortified. As it was, he was secretly enjoying every second of it.
By the time night fully settled, Matthew had bathed both himself and Zachary and secured the cave door from the inside.
“Meow.” The lynx hopped down from the bed and immediately latched onto Matthew, seeking
ttention.
In the dim glow, that familiar restless heat stirred again. Even after drinking plenty of water, his throat still felt uncomfortably dry.
“Meow… Ummmm…
Hearing his own voice only made Zachary more unsettled.

Step by step, Matthew lifted the lynx into his arms and carried him toward the bed.
Fulshed
Leaning in close, he murmured against Zachary’s ear, his breath warm and low. “Jaden’s not here. You don’t need to restrain yourself. You can let go.”
“Awroo?” Zachary’s eyes flew open.
What is he even talking about? I’m a lynx right now–what does he expect me to do?
Even as that thought flashed through his mind, something in his body seemed to respond.
The next moment, Matthew leaned over him, his voice suddenly darker and more teasing./So what do you want? Human form first, or should I shift into a black panther?”
“Awroo?” Zachary was flipped onto his back, paws flailing in panic.
Wait, this is getting a little…weird and twisted.
Matthew studied him for a moment, then tilted his head like he was genuinely considering it. “Or… both?”
“Awroo!”
No way–that’s way too much!
“I’ll try my best,” Matthew said with a faint smirk, golden eyes flickering in the firelight.
On the thick beast–hide bedding, the black panther lowered his head and bit down gently on the lynx’s neck.
“Meow…
“Meow… Mmmm…”
“Meow…”
Inside the cave, tufts of fur scattered across the ground.
The lynx’s cries grew softer, more distressed.
But the black panther didn’t ease up.
The lynx tried to escape, but his body refused to cooperate, pinned helplessly in place.
When morning light spilled into the cave, everything was quiet.
With no urgent duties that day, Matthew slept in until he naturally woke. Light red scratch marks covered his chest, shoulders, and back–most of all across his spine.
Zachary, in beast form, didn’t always have full control over his claws. When overwhelmed by discomfort, excitement, or sensation, his pale hooked claws would extend instinctively. Even without full strength behind them, they were still sharp enough to leave marks.

Matthew seemed almost pleased by them, running his fingers over the scratches again and again.
Finished
Zachary was still asleep. Matthew quietly prepared fish and slowly simmered a pot of chowder, thinking Zachary would need something warm and gentle for his stomach when he woke.
A sub–therian’s special cycle was most intense during the first two days, and they couldn’t be left alone. Matthew intended to stay by his side the entire day.
Even the thought made him stir the pot with a faint, content rhythm.
Zachary stared blankly at the rough stone wall, feeling like he’d completely lost his will to go on. The events of last night were still seared into his mind.
A human and a beast… even beast–to–beast? What kind of ridiculous world is this?
Creator, your imagination knows no limits. You just do whatever you want, huh?
But that wasn’t even the worst part. The worst part was that his body felt like it didn’t belong to him–and worse, he still wanted it.
Oh my! What is wrong with me?
Matthew entered. “You’re awake.”
“Meow
Matthew bent down and lifted the fluffy lynx into his arms. “Time to eat.”
Zachary had started fearing him. Even the lightest touch made him flinch, but he was too drained to resist, so he allowed himself to be carried.
On the stone table sat a pot of steaming fish chowder, warm vapor rising into the air.
Matthew waited on him with unusual patience, a faint, satisfied smile on his face.
Zachary felt both full and starving at the same time.
But the moment he saw the chowder, his appetite vanished. He turned his head away weakly and let out a resentful “Awroo” at Matthew.
Matthew assumed he was just exhausted from the night before and brought the bowl closer. “Come on, try to have a little.”
“Awroo!” Zachary only kept his mouth shut.
You wore me out all night, and now you’re giving me this fishy–smelling soup?
Matthew frowned slightly. “What’s wrong?”
“Awroo!” The lynx glared at him and tapped Matthew’s forehead twice with
a
paw.
Matthew let out a quiet laugh. “Are you still mad at me about last night?”
