Chapter 16 Matthew Is Back

Noticing Jaden’s reaction, Zachary was practically in awe. Then, he held Jaden’s front paw and rubbed his face against it.

“Jaden, you’re just too adorable.”

Jaden’s pupils widened slightly, and a soft purr rumbled from his throat.

Zachary tried hard to suppress the urge to bury his face in the fluffy fur as he stood up and ruffled Jaden’s head. “I’ll go make breakfast.”

Jaden howled in response.

In his beast form, Jaden seemed even more like a child. With his tail held high, he followed Zachary into the

cave.

Zachary took out the moo beast meat Taylor had brought yesterday. With the better lighting now, he looked at it carefully.

The texture and marbling of the meat really did resemble high–quality modern beef.

They had picked some kiwis yesterday, so Zachary washed the meat and cut it into thick pieces. After that, he peeled the kiwis, mashed them, and mixed them in with the meat to marinate it. After resting for a while, the meat would become especially tender.

Zachary picked up the flint and struck it repeatedly against wood shavings. Though he wasn’t as skilled as Jaden, small sparks gradually appeared.

While the meat marinated, Zachary took several tomatoes and the eggs from the clucking beasts that Jaden had brought back yesterday. He planned to cook a pot of tomato and egg soup.

He heated oil in the pot, stir–fried the tomatoes until they released their juices, added water, and let it boil. After beating the eggs, he slowly poured them into the pot in a circular motion. Then, he let it simmer for another two minutes before adding a bit of salt.

Jaden watched from the side, completely absorbed.

Using two small pieces of beast hide as pads, Zachary lifted the stone pot off the fire and replaced it with a stone slab. Once it heated up, he poured in the last bit of oil they had at home and laid the marinated moo beast meat on top, slowly pan–searing it over low heat.

As the oil sizzled, the aroma gradually filled the cave. Zachary flipped the meat with eating sticks and tossed in a handful of mushrooms to cook alongside it. The way he moved looked just like a professional chef.

While he cooked, Jaden squatted nearby. His stomach had already been empty, and the rich smell of meat made it rumble loudly.

Zachary picked up a piece and tasted it. It was exactly like the pure, original flavor of a steak!

Then, he divided the meat and mushrooms into portions and served Jaden a large bowl of tomato and egg

Jaden tried the mushroom first. It tasted juicy and was mixed with the rich fragrance of oil and a lightly charred aroma. Jaden realized it was completely different from the mushrooms in yesterday’s soup.

“How does it taste?” asked Zachary

“The mushrooms taste very good,” Jaden remembered the name Zachary had used for the plant and answered honestly. “They have a special fragrance.”

“Right? I like them too. It’s very fresh,” Zachary said with a smile.

When Jaden tasted the moo beast meat, amazement appeared in his eyes. The thick slice of roasted meat had a lightly crisp on the outside, but the inside was incredibly tender. With each bite, juices burst in his mouth. The soup had a rich flavor as well, slightly sweet and sour. Drinking a bowl of it in the chilly morning air warmed his stomach completely.

As always, Jaden finished every bit of food without leaving anything behind. He even looked a little reluctant to stop eating, even though he was already full. He had drunk two large bowls of soup alone.

“Jaden! The Alphas are back!” An urgent voice suddenly

came from outside the cave.

Taylor ran over and said in excitement. “The Alphas have returned from the hunt!”

Hearing this, Jaden sprang to his feet at once. The usually calm and composed look on his face now showed a trace of anticipation and excitement.

Zachary was also infected by the children’s excitement at first: However, once he realized what it meant, he couldn’t smile anymore.

After all, Matthew had returned, which meant that the mate assigned to him in this world had come back.

The more Zachary thought about it, more nervous he became. He couldn’t even finish the half bowl of soup–still in front of him.

Before long, Quincy also arrived.

“Zachary, do you want to go to the center of the tribe and choose food with us?”

“I’ll go with you.” Zachary nodded. After all, the meat and oil at home were already finished.
