Chapter 293 The Great Pheasant Hunt
impossible to miss.
The other panthers stared at the slender shaft protruding from the bird’s back in disbelief,
“Zachary caught that?
“With those tiny sticks?”
Matthew looked unbearably pleased with himself. “Of course. Zachary’s incredible.
“He even designed the weapon himself.”
From that point on, Zachary became the center of attention. The panthers started deliberately driving prey into his range just so they could watch him strike targets from a distance.
The creatures of the ancient forest had never encountered bows and arrows before. Many believed they had escaped once enough distance separated them from danger. Then a sudden sting would hit. Panic followed, but before long, numbness spread through their bodies, leaving them unable to do anything except collapse.
Unlike the panthers, who relied on claws and fangs to bring down prey, Zachary’s style appeared elegant. The smooth motions of drawing, aiming, and releasing looked almost effortless. To Yael and the others. it was undeniably impressive.
Eventually, curiosity got the better of them. After shifting into human form, Yael and the others eagerly took turns trying the bow. Zachary guided them through the basics and quickly discovered they were natural learners. They adapted surprisingly fast, combining strength with impressive accuracy.
The trip home brought one minor complication. The anesthetic wore off sooner than expected, and several animals nearly escaped. The panthers were forced into a hectic chase before finally recapturing them. Even so, they returned to the tribe before nightfall.
As soon as they entered the tribe’s central area, two small carts shot past at full speed. Cubs sat inside while little black panthers, secured by thick ropes, raced ahead as the pullers. Around them, a crowd of cubs waited impatiently, some eager for a turn riding and others wanting to pull.
Zachary could only blink.
He had seen carts pulled by oxen, horses, and donkeys before. Panther–drawn carts, however, were entirely new to him. Even more surprising, the cubs had figured out the harness system on their own.
Still, the ropes were positioned alarmingly close to their necks, looking both uncomfortable and like a potential choking hazard.
Taylor and Jaden soon came running over.
At first, Zachary instinctively stared at the gap where Taylor’s front teeth used to be. Then he remembered the boy was only shedding baby teeth and relaxed. Even missing a few teeth, the curly–haired cub remained adorable, though Zachary had to admit he looked cuter before.
Taylor had refused to leave the house earlier, so Jaden stayed nearby to keep him company. Before long. passing cubs joined in. One became several, and soon a whole group was playing together.
To keep Taylor happy, none of the cubs teased him. Instead, they reassured him that he looked fine. Some

Because it was built for a child, Zachary had fitted it with two additional wheels to make it more stable.
Matthew folded his arms across his chest. “Well? Get moving.
“Think of it as a workout,”
Putting all his weight behind it, Jaden shoved the cart forward and managed to circle the cave once. Only after that did Matthew finally climb off. With a lazy yawn, he muttered, “You’re weak,” then wandered of search of Zachary.
Jaden had long since given up trying to reason with his immature alpha. Instead, he pushed the cart toward Taylor. The boy had been upset about losing his teeth, and a new toy seemed like the perfect distraction
Matthew was heading out to hunt that day, while Zachary wanted to see how well the anesthetic–tipped arrows worked. In the end, he joined the hunting trip.
Yael and the others paid little attention to the decision. They assumed Zachary simply wanted to spend some time outdoors. Besides, with several large black panthers accompanying him, there was no safer place for a sub–therian.

But prey animals survived for a reason. Generations of escaping predators had sharpened their instincts to an incredible degree, and they even cooperated to stay alive.
Suddenly, a bird high above sounded a warning. “Chirp! Chirp!” Hearing it, the lead doe gave a quick alarm call. In an instant, the entire herd bolted and disappeared into the dense undergrowth.
No one was surprised. Failed hunts happened all the time. The panthers brushed leaves from their fur and moved on in search of another opportunity.

After moping around for what felt like forever, Taylor finally smiled again. He no longer covered his mouth whenever he spoke.
The cubs had chosen a wide open area as their playground, and the tribe’s center turned out to be the ideal spot. They spent nearly the entire day racing around and causing chaos there.
Now that their meals had improved, the growing cubs had become noticeably heavier. Zachary tried lifting both Taylor and Jaden together and nearly ended up sitting on the ground.
As evening settled over the tribe, the
cubs headed home. Even while leaving, they were already making plans to meet up with Taylor and Jaden again the next day.
