Chapter 819 An Unexpected Cub

Finished

Sean looked up and scanned his surroundings. Towering cliffs rose on all sides, nearly vertical. The gray- black rock walls were almost barren, with only the occasional patch of vines and moss clinging to cracks in the stone.

The sky formed a ring overhead. The sheer cliffs enclosing the forest framed it like the mouth of a massive well, cold, damp, and shadowed.

At the bottom of the ancient sinkhole, icy underground rivers wound through the rugged terrain, appearing and disappearing without warning.

Dark limestone caves were everywhere, riddled with branching passages and shrouded in mist. One wrong turn could trap someone in a maze that led only to unfathomable darkness.

Sean had no intention of lingering. Lanny was still waiting for him back at the cave.

He’s been looking pretty rough these past few days. He’s always coughing, barely eating, and he doesn’t even have the energy to talk. He’s only started to feel a little better over the last couple of days.

The thought made him pick up his pace.

Then, at a shallow bend in the river, Sean suddenly stopped.

Among the slick, mosscovered rocks, a cub was wedged between the stones. The cub’s eyes were shut, his head hanging limply to one side without the slightest movement.

Sean hurried over and placed his fingers beneath the cub’s nose. The moment he felt a faint breath, he scooped him up and shook him hard. Wake up! Wake up!

The palefaced cub didn’t respond.

Sean hooked one arm around him and turned him facedown across his forearm. Then he slapped the cub’s back with his free hand while trying to jolt his head forward.

The cub suddenly broke into a violent coughing fit. After hacking up several mouthfuls of water, he finally managed to crack his eyes open.

Before he could even make out who was holding him, his eyes fluttered shut again, and he lost

consciousness.

Sean let out a breath of relief and slung the cub over his shoulder. Supporting the cub’s back with one hand and carrying the meat with the other, he strode toward the cave.

Ancient trees towered overhead, their roots twisting and intertwining across the forest floor.

Sean walked for a long time. After pushing through a dense thicket, the view gradually opened up.

The ground there sat slightly higher than the surrounding area, with a cave in the middle. The space around it had been cleared neatly and paved with flat stones. Several wooden racks stood nearby, draped

with beastshides.

Sean called out, Lanny, m back. Lanny?

No one answered.

His heart tightened.

Sean hurried into the cave. When he still couldn’t find his mate anywhere, he tossed the meat onto a nearby rock, set the cub down on the bed, and rushed back outside. Lanny? Lanny!

He had barely gone far when he spotted his mate walking toward him with a hide bag in his arms.

Lanny waved. I’m over here.

Sean ran over and immediately looked him over from head to toe. Where did you go?

Lanny opened the beast hide bag. I went to gather some wild greens nearby. Don’t worry. I wasn’t going far.”

Sean took the bag from his hands. Next time, wait for me and we’ll go together. Don’t go by yourself.

Lanny nodded and let him take his hand as they headed back together.

Before they knew it, they’d already spent ten years

here.

At first, they tried every possible way to get out. Eventually, they stopped fighting it. Being alive, and being alive together, already felt like a blessing from the Beast God.

Sean said, I picked up a cub today.”

Lanny looked surprised. A cub?

I

Yeah. I think he got swept here by the underground river too. He was barely breathing when I found him. spent forever pounding on his back before he finally coughed up some water. He woke up for a second, then passed out again.

Talking as they walked, they soon reached the cave.

Lanny looked at the cub lying on the bed and froze for a moment. Then he sat down beside him and gently brushed a hand across his cheek.

Sean watched his mate’s lowered gaze and asked, What’s wrong?

Lanny let out a quiet sigh. He reminds me of Matthew when he was little.

Sean leaned in for a closer look. You know, he really does look a little like Matthew. Maybe all good- looking cubs just have something in common.

A trace of concern crossed Lanny’s expression. There’s a wound on his shoulder. I think he’s running a

fever.”

The therians often went out hunting and knew a few basic medicinal herbs. Sean grabbed some medicinal

herbs he’d gathered the day before, crouched on the ground, and crushed them with a stone mortar.

Lanny dried the cub off with a beast hide, then sat nearby, slicing up the meat his mate had brought back. He planned to make some broth later and feed it to the cub.

As Sean ground the medicinal herbs, he chuckled. Matthew picked up a cub once, too. The cub actually came back with him. I’d just gotten back from the Snow Leopard tribe. I only stepped away to fetch some water, and somehow Matthew had already found himself a cub.

The cub was adorable. Fairskinned, pretty as could be. He stood next to our cub with tears streaming down his face, crying so hard he could barely get a word out. I honestly thought Matthew had bullied him. Though the cub was kind of funny. He was always saying things none of us could understand.

Lanny remembered, too, a smile appearing in his eyes. After Matthew came back, he’d talk in his sleep sometimes. He’d even call out that cub’s name. Half asleep, he’d keep patting the space beside him. He’d mumble things like, Don’t cry,and Eat some fruit.

Sean grinned and continued, That cub was hilarious too. He kept calling Matthew Mattand was always. trying to get him to meow. You should’ve seen the look on Matthew’s expression. It was priceless.
