“I said… your manipulative wife secretly tried to stop Chloe from coming to the Lewis Group anniversary event and went so far as to put someone’s life in danger.”
Zachary’s gaze stayed fixed on Jennifer as he spoke, his voice dropping even colder. “You didn’t actually think this would never come out, did you?”
Jennifer blinked, momentarily stunned, then stared back at him with visible unease. She couldn’t wrap her head around how he could possibly know. That plan had been flawless–no loose ends, no witnesses. How?
No way. He was bluffing. Had to be.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. Stop what? Endanger someone’s life? You can’t just throw accusations like that around.” She stepped forward, grabbing Arthur’s arm and pressing herself close to him like a frightened child. “Arthur, what are they even saying? I don’t understand any of this.”
“Keep pretending,” Zachary shot back with a scoff. “Go ahead. I’ll enjoy watching this performance.”
“Of course you’re taking Chloe’s side. That accident happened forever ago–what does that have to do with me? Just because I don’t like Chloe doesn’t mean you get to pin things on me. I seriously don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Jennifer tightened her grip on Arthur’s hand and shook her head desperately. “Arthur, are they gonna say next that I had something to do with Charles‘ murder too?”
Arthur glanced down at her trembling form tucked against him, his expression unreadable. He opened his mouth to speak, but Zachary cut him off.
“Jennifer, you got to that driver, made sure the car crashed, made sure he didn’t make it. You thought you were so clever–even the cops bought it as an accident. But here’s the thing… you overlooked one detail.”
Zachary gave her a thin smile.
Jennifer’s heart stuttered. Her eyes locked onto his, dread pooling in her stomach.
“You didn’t think the driver would cover his own ass, did you?” Zachary’s stare was cold and unblinking.
Her eyes narrowed involuntarily. He continued, “He recorded every phone call with you. Every last detail of the plan–dates, locations, everything. Those fifty–plus payments you made from different accounts? He wrote it all down in a notebook. Hid it in that rundown rental of his.”
Panic flickered briefly across Jennifer’s face.
“Dumb as he was, even he wasn’t stupid enough to take that much cash without protecting himself. Otherwise, no witnesses, right? Case closed.” Zachary pulled a small notebook from Joel’s hand and waved it lazily.
“Jennifer, you think about it–how many years would they give you if I handed this over? Or maybe you’d be looking at worse?”
“That’s bull. You’re lying. I never sent him a cent.” The words flew out of her mouth before she could stop

them. The second they left her lips, she knew she’d walked right into it.
“I–no, that’s not-”

Jennifer’s head snapped toward Arthur. The way he was looking at her now–it was different. Cold. Distant. Almost like he didn’t recognize her.
“Arthur! They’re trying to trick me. I swear I didn’t do it.” She reached for him again, but this time, he stepped back. Just a little. Just enough.
Was that… disgust in his eyes?
Jennifer stood frozen, panic rising fast.
That bastard had set her up. Her expression twisted with rage. “You did that on purpose. There’s no notebook, is there?”
