“Jennifer made it clear. She only wants me there.” Chloe’s voice was flat, final. She was already moving. “Myers Group still needs you.”
Before Arthur could respond, she’d picked up her pace and was gone.
Arthur stood frozen for a moment. Once her words sank in, he moved to go after her–but Charles stopped him.
“Stay put.”
Arthur halted, turning back. “Grandfather, this whole thing is because of me. I can’t just stand here. If someone’s going to die over this, let it be me.”
“That’s not your decision to make.” Charles gestured for Greg to wheel him out. “Put everyone we have or this. I want Chloe and Robert protected. As for Jennifer…” His voice hardened. “If she won’t play nice, we’r done being polite. If she lays a finger on Robert, I’ll put a bullet in her myself.”
Arthur stood there a moment longer, watching the fury in his grandfather’s expression, then quickly followed him out:
Chloe drove toward the location Jennifer had given her.
The car ate up the miles, and with each one, her eyes turned colder.
For a moment, it was as if the woman they used to call Clo had resurfaced–the one drenched in blood, who killed without hesitation, the strongest fighter to ever crawl out of a pile of bodies.
Thinking about who she’d been before, something burned behind Chloe’s eyes. She’d worked so hard to hold back, to blend in, to live quietly like any ordinary person.
But reality had other plans. Some people just couldn’t stop dancing on the edge of a blade. Fine. If that’s how they wanted it, she was done being polite.
One hand on the wheel, she used the other to dial Eugene.
He picked up quickly.
“I’m going to be tied up with something. Dinner might have to wait a bit,” she said evenly.
“Take your time. I’ll be here.” His voice came through steady, grounding.
She acknowledged softly, not saying much more. “Eugene, I’m going to hang up now, okay?”
“Okay.”
She ended the call and tossed her phone onto the passenger seat. Reaching over, she pulled open the glave compartment. Inside, a black handgun sat waiting.
Chloe’s gaze darkened. It had been a long, long time since she’d last touched something like this.

The room was pitch black. Not a single light on.
Robert’s hands were bound. Tape covered his mouth.
In the darkness, he had no idea where he was. All he knew was that a draft cut through the space, and it w cold.
“Clang.” The wooden door swung open. Footsteps. Someone was here.
The lights flicked on. Bright, blinding. Robert squeezed his eyes shut, waiting for them to adjust.
“Well, well. You little brat. Too bad–today you’re mine. And you’re done.”
At the voice, Robert opened his eyes and looked at the woman standing there.
Jennifer was dressed all in black–black top, black pants–like something crawled out of the dark. Her eye were wild as they fixed on him, like she might turn feral and tear into him at any second.
