“Don’t thank me yet. You’re not done.” Owen spread his arms wide, a cold glint in his eyes. “You should be grateful the Master’s giving you this chance.”
Master.
Jennifer’s heart stuttered. Her eyes shifted to the man still seated on the sofa, watching her with detached interest. Who was he? Really?
Then the pain hit. Sharp. Sudden. Buried deep in her abdomen. She looked down. Blood. Dark and spreading fast. The metallic smell hit her a second later–thick, wrong, everywhere.
Her body felt like it was being torn apart from the inside. Her vision blurred, but she forced herself to look up one last time at the figure in white.
“Who… are you…” The words barely left her lips before everything went dark and she collapsed.
In the space between consciousness and nothing, she thought she heard his voice again.
“She only gets one shot at this…”
One shot at what? She wanted to ask, to fight, to hold on–but the darkness swallowed her
whole.

Chloe sat quietly in the living room, staring at the date on her phone screen. The numbers stared back, unwavering.
Oralia walked in a moment later, a fresh bouquet of flowers in her arms. She arranged them carefully on the table, stepping back to admire her work. “These are gorgeous, don’t you think, Chloe?”
No answer. Oralia turned. Chloe hadn’t moved. She hadn’t even blinked. Frowning, Orali walked over and waved a hand in front of Chloe’s face.
Chloe blinked, finally surfacing. “Hmm?”
“I’ve been talking for a solid minute. Where were you?” Oralia tilted her head, studying her. She’d never seen Chloe spaced out like that before.
Chloe raised an eyebrow, almost surprised herself. She offered a small smile instead of an explanation. “Just thinking about something.”
“Something?” Oralia leaned in, lowering her voice like she was sharing a secret. “Something

Chloe gave her a look. “Exciting?”
“Come on. How long are you gonna keep this quiet?” Oralia grinned, leaning closer. “When are
and Eugene gonna make things official? For real. I heard Melinda and Zachary have a bet going–who’s gonna confess first, you or him.”

Chloe bit back a laugh.
Since when did that happen?
“And what’s the bet?” Chloe asked, keeping her voice neutral, though the corner of her mouth twitched.
“Zachary says it’s the guy’s job to make the first move, so Eugene’s definitely gonna say something first.” Oralia nodded sagely. “But Melinda says you don’t play by the rules. She thinks Eugene’s basically your puppy dog at this point, so you’ll be the one to lock it down.”
Chloe’s smile widened. “Melinda knows me well.”
Too bad neither of them would win that bet.
Her eyes drifted back to the date on her phone. Less than forty–eight hours now until the deadline she’d set for herself.
It was coming fast.
Time had never moved this quickly before. Forty–eight hours felt like forty–eight seconds- gone before she could catch her breath.
“So, anyway,” Oralia continued, adjusting the flowers, “Melinda mentioned Eugene’s getting discharged tomorrow, right? I booked a table at that new spot downtown. Thought we could all do dinner, Celebrate,”
Eugene’s discharge.
Right. Chloe had almost forgotten. After days of treatment, he was finally healed enough to leave. That was good. Really good.
“Dinner’s not gonna work,” Chloe said simply, standing. “I’ve got something else planned.”
She headed toward her room, but Oralia’s mention had sparked something. Eugene was leaving the hospital. She was going to pick him up herself–and she had a gift for him. Something she
