“I don’t know.”

"What do you mean you don't know?" Mina said, pushing herself up off the bench, now standing with her arms folded and stare at me with a look that was starting to be suspicion. "You said you need to show me something. How do you not know what it is?"

"I'll show you."

"I'm not doing this, Sera. Whatever it is."

I stepped around her to the door, trying not to meet her eyes.

"You need to get out of this room," I said. "You haven't been out of it since he left."

Mina scoffed, behind me. "What business is that of yours?"

"Everyone's scattered since they left, and it's just you and me up here, so that's what."

"I don't have to answer to you. I don't have to do anything."

"You do have to eat," I said, and turned to face her. "You haven't been down to the kitchens. You've been living off water, and that won't cut it."

"So what's the plan here?"

"The plan is to feed you and then show you this thing. Get up."

She stared at me, arms still crossed. "I swear to the gods if this is something stupid, I'll be mad at you."

I rolled my eyes. "Come on then, let's get this done with. Don't be dramatic."

Mina was quiet a long moment, and I thought I would have to take her by the arm. But she let her arms fall and sighed.

"Keep walking. It gets better in a bit."

She looked at me with a sharp edge and kept quiet and kept coming. The smell came in waves, and then a torch appeared on the wall, flickered, went out. A man passed in a dark corner, moving in the other direction, and gave me a nod. Then another.

"Is that meat?" Her voice was small. "It smells like meat."

I said nothing. The light was coming clearer now and the sound of the water grew louder. I turned a corner and there it was, a door I had not touched in three days. A door that had stood open for three days. A door meant to be shut on a cell.

I felt Mina's eyes on me and said, "I need to show you something."

"I don't know," she said slowly. "I don't like this. This feels wrong, Sera."

"Get in here." I pushed open the door and she pulled back and tried to take her hand. I tightened my grip and pulled her inside.
