"Or what, you'll beat me up again?" Taya snarled.

I wanted to laugh. The fact that she was bringing that up was genuinely funny.

Mina stepped between us, breaking Taya's hold and shoving a hand to her chest. "Back off, Taya." Mina's voice was a growl. "You know what being Luna means. You know what happens when the Alpha finds out you put your stinking hand on his mate. You're courting death, Taya."

That wasn't enough to make Taya back down. Her eyes were wild with fury and something else, something bewildered, and I knew I was looking at a girl who couldn't understand her own self.

"How does my father end up on your side of everything," she said, her voice shaking with rage. "Why does he just agree to whatever you say. He hates you southerners, but he's letting you run the pack. I don't get it. He just... he just..."

Mina was between us, her back to me. Her voice came out level but tight.

"Whatever you think, Kael knows better than to cross the Luna. You should know it too. This isn't a game. You put your hand on her again, and you're dead."

"You think he'd kill me?" Taya said, and her laughter was vicious. "You think he'd kill his own daughter?"

I felt my heart turn cold. I knew that sound. It was the sound of a girl who could not understand that her father would never have cared if he killed her. And that sound would do what nothing else could. It would make me angry.

"Back. Off." Mina said.

"I don't take orders from an omega," Taya spat.

"You take orders from the Luna." Mina's voice was not level any more. "Back. Off. Now"

The hall fell silent, and then erupted.

"Fight!" A voice shouted.

"Fight!" A dozen more took up the chant, their voices echoing off the walls as the pack surged forward.

Taya's smile stretched. "Fair fight!" She called. "Just us! Friendly duel!"

Mina grabbed her arm, spinning her around. "No!" Her voice cut through the chanting crowd. "You will not do this!"
