My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian (Sera and Fenris) novel Chapter 377

Sera

No one moved for a long second after the rogue woman went still. The yard was quiet now, the crowd thinned out, leaving behind only those who hadn't mustered the nerve to slip away. My heart still pounded in my chest, and a slow sense of absurdity crept over me.

Mina's hand tightened on my shoulder. "That's an insane thing to say," she hissed. "You weren't here to see what that thing just did." She pointed at the man on the ground, the claw marks still raw down the side of his face and his chest. "You're going to let it go after it did that to him? Not that long ago?"

She stared at me, incredulous, searching my face. Her Southern drawl was harsh, her words sharp with disbelief. Her grip on my shoulder remained tight, unyielding.

In that moment, she looked less like my sister-in-law and more like a version of Lyra.

And maybe, I admitted to myself, I didn't fully understand either. My heartbeat slowed, the tightness in my chest loosening. I looked from her face to the rogue's limp form, to the battered man nearby. I could see he was already healing…

I looked at the rogue, my head still shaking. "I... I don't know."

Mina was staring at me, her expression incredulous. She knew me better than anyone else here. I knew she could tell something was off.

I looked down at the rogue woman on the ground again, at her black hair and the pale curve of her neck. And the longer I looked, the more I felt some stubborn certainty draining out of me. It was the same feeling as losing my footing on ice.

I stepped forward anyway. "Let her go."
