My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian (Sera and Fenris) novel Chapter 461

Kane

I stumbled out of the car and ran for the clinic doors. They slid open with a hiss. I raced into the corridor, looking frantically for Elara.

There. Delia sat in one of the plastic chairs, sobbing into her hands. Marcas stood beside her, his hand on her back. I ran to them, my heart pounding. "Marcas!" I called. "Delia!"

Marcas straightened and met my gaze, his face pale and drawn. He shook his head.

"What happened?" I demanded, breathless. "Where's Elara?"

Delia lifted her tear-stained face to me. "Oh, Kane," she wailed. "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry..."

Before I could ask again, a gentle voice came from behind me. "Alpha. Please, come in with me."

I turned. Dr. Crane stood in the doorway of one of the rooms, his dark suit rumpled, his thinning hair disheveled. His somber brown eyes met mine.

But he didn't say anything, didn't offer any explanation as to what was happening. Why Elara wasn't here.

"Is Elara okay?" I asked, but he just held out a hand, beckoning me to enter the room.

I shook my head. Not until I knew what was happening. "Tell me first," I insisted. "What's going on? Where's my wife?"

Dr. Crane looked at me with deep sadness in his eyes. "I understand your concerns, Kane. But I'm afraid it would be best if we spoke privately."

"What are you not telling me?" I growled, alarm rising in my throat.

But Dr. Crane kept his silence, his expression solemn, unyielding. He motioned again to the room.

I hesitated, my instincts screaming at me. Something terrible had happened. I could feel it in my bones.

I opened my mouth to refuse, to demand answers. But before I could say a word, Marcas called out behind me. "Kane. Do what he says. Please."

I spun around to face him. He looked broken, his face etched with grief. Beside him, Delia buried her face in her hands and wept.

I turned back to Dr. Crane. His eyes never left mine, filled with sorrow and pity.
