Lyra
A pause. "Oh, Lyra. Oh, Nadia. I'm so sorry. How did he...?"
"I'd rather not talk about it right now," I said, my voice flat. I felt sick.
Sera's tone sharpened. "Something's very wrong, Lyra. Tell me what's going on."
Sera's words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken suspicion. I closed my eyes, swallowing hard. "Not now, Sera. Please."
A moment of silence passed between us. I could almost feel her frustration through the line. "You're scaring me, Lyra. I just want to help."
I shook my head at nothing. "I know. I'm sorry." I drew in a shaky breath. "Can we talk about something else?"
"Okay..." A pause. "Lyra, I...there's something I need to tell you too."
I straightened, my grip on the phone tightening. "What is it?"
There was a pause. "I'm pregnant."
Laughter bubbled up in my throat, tears of joy welling in my eyes. "Oh, Sera! That's amazing!" I grinned at the wallpaper, my mind suddenly filled with thoughts of baby blankets and lullabies. "How far along are you? Do you know if it's a boy or girl?"
"About eight weeks," she said, and I could hear the smile in her voice. "Too early to tell, but there's time yet."
"I'm so happy for you!" I bubbled. "You're going to be such an amazing mother."
Sera's laughter was soft. "Thank you, Lyra. I...I hope so." There was another pause. "There's something else you should know though."
I held my breath. "What is it?"
The line went silent. Then Sera said, "The child...it's Kane's."
