"Stay back! Don't come closer!"
Her hands clawed at the ground desperately, searching for anything to use against the massive beast. "Go away, please! Go away!"
A stone. She hurled it at the wolf's shoulder, but it simply bounced off without effect.
Dirt. She flung a fistful at its muzzle, but it scattered ineffectually across the wolf's face. A broken branch. It shattered against the wolf's broad chest, splintered pieces clattering to the ground. But still it came.
Still sobbing, Runa pleaded with the wolf itself. "Please... don't hurt me... I'll be good, I promise! Just send me home..."
But the wolf was unmoved. It kept coming, its pale eyes fixed on her. Steady. Unhurried. Relentless.
The wolf's jaws clamped down on her leg, piercing through flesh and muscle. Bone cracked and splintered beneath its teeth. "AHHHHHH!" Runa screamed, writhing in agony. "Stop, please! Stop!"
She thrashed and kicked, trying desperately to free herself. Blood gushed from the wound, soaking the dank forest floor. "Please stop! It hurts, it hurts!"
With one powerful yank, the wolf dragged Runa backwards through the undergrowth, her fingernails scrabbling futilely against the earth. "Noooo! Let go!"
It released her mangled leg, only to lunge forward again, teeth bared. Runa's hands shot up to protect her face and throat. "No, no, please!" she begged as the wolf tore into her middle with savage brutality.
"GAAAAHHH!!" She shrieked, back arching off the ground. "Please, it hurts! Please stop!"
But the wolf didn't stop. It mauled her again and again, each vicious bite sending jolts of white-hot pain through her small body. "Aaahhh, stop...stop..." she whimpered, voice growing hoarse. "Hurts...please..."
"Why?! Why won't you let me go? I hate you! I hate you, you miserable beast! What did I ever do to you?! Die, please die, just die already!"
The force of that hatred, coming out of a twelve year old, struck me in my own chest.
Then the monster had her by the throat, its teeth sinking into her soft skin. Runa gasped and choked, trying to draw breath around the crushing pressure. "P-please...stop..." she rasped weakly. Her pleas faded to gurgles and whimpers as the wolf shook her limp body to and fro.
