Fenris
"Two more days," I said, not looking at Jace.
"Two more days," Jace repeated, blowing on his hands. "And then your mate reminds you that you're a man and not a wolf."
I rode on.
"Look," he said. "I know you haven't said much about what Halvard told you that last night. But I saw it in your face when you came out, and I know it changed you. What did he say?"
Jace had seen Corwin's blood himself, so I would not put more on him. He did not need to hear Halvard's words by the fire. The enemy had grown stronger, and the fallen packs were only tests. In time they would come. I would not be the one to tell him. I set my jaw.
"He said to go home," I said curtly.
"Go home," Jace echoed, shaking his head.
"Yes,"
"He told you to go home." He shook his head in visible frustration. "How does that even help?"
I clenched my jaw in irritation. He was asking too many questions.
"Does your Alpha even know where you are?" I asked, my tone sharp.
Jace shrugged it off. "My Alpha doesn't need to know."
"And if the man comes looking?"
Jace laughed, a short, mirthless sound. "That one would never come North. Not him. Not for me, not for anyone."
I let it lie. "Hmm, your choice."
