My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian (Sera and Fenris) novel Chapter 519

Elara

"It'll be cold up there, hard on you," Kane said beside me, his voice unpleasantly pleasant.

"Didn't I say that last night? Before you decided I was coming? I told you the cold would kill me. You said I'd survive."

Kane laughed, his polite laugh. "And you will."

I dug my nails into my palms, closed my eyes for a long blink.

When I opened them, he was watching me, his thumb slowly turning his signet ring. "Your mother and father had a lot to say to you before they left, didn't they?"

My fake parents had told me I was on my own with this one.

I met his eyes directly. "Just be safe, wrap up warm, eat, call when you can." I forced my voice smooth, careful.

Kane blinked slowly, stretched his jaw. He turned back to his window. "Of course. They worry."

I probed gently at the stick under my skin. Aldric's last words to me came back in a rush. Your scent remains exactly the same to me. I will always know where you are.

Valdris was where Aldric was, and where my mother and sister were. I clenched my hands into fists in my lap, where he couldn't see them.

Around midday, our driver pulled into a roadside fuel station. The warrior Kane had brought sat up front next to the driver, while Kane and I rode in the back.

I got out as Kane walked off, phone pressed to his ear. The warrior stayed put by the pump, keeping an eye on things. I stretched, feeling the sun on my skin, and drifted over to our driver as he worked the pump.

"Ever been to the border market before?"

"That's my regular route. Get a lot of Southern goods there. Fancy jewelry and all sorts of sweet stuff."

"So who drives back south from the border market?"
