Elara
Kane pulled me through the border market, holding tight to the hand now marked by the gold band. I tried to dig my heels in, to make him stop. I didn't care that people were staring.
"Let go of me!" I yanked hard against Kane's grip. A sob tore from my throat. "Leave me alone! I'm not going!"
A porter balancing a load on his back stepped into our path. "Excuse us," Kane said, and the man veered aside.
I tried one last time to pull free, twisting my wrist. Kane let go and I stumbled back, catching myself against the rough wood of a stall. I glared at him, backing up, searching for a gap to escape through. But the crowd closed in.
My back slammed against a rough-hewn wood plank. I faced Kane, breath punching out of me with each ragged gasp. My legs gave out and I slid down, landing hard on my ass. Still glaring up at him, I snarled, "Get away from me! I'm not your fucking pet, you know."
"You're whatever I want you to be," he said quietly, keeping his gaze locked on mine. "Now, get up."
His fingers closed around my wrist, and he yanked me to my feet. I stumbled, but his grip held me upright. He pulled me forward again, and I had no choice but to follow, my wrist burning in his unrelenting grasp.
He stopped beside our car. With his free hand, he took his phone from his pocket and turned it over to the driver. Releasing my wrist, he held his empty palm up towards me, waiting.
I locked my jaw, refusing to move.
He waited.
"I don't fucking like this," I cursed under my breath as I yanked my phone out of my pocket.
He plucked it from my fingers and passed it through the window. My phone was gone.
Kane tugged me forward again. We reached the gate. One guard stepped into our path.
"Anything from the South? Phone? Watch?"
"No," Kane said, and held up the scroll.
