Sera
Mina held my gaze a moment, then looked away. "Alright." She nodded. "Alright, Sera."
I turned to leave. Amara was leaning over the table, her nose inches from a pile of chopped carrots. Mina pushed a bit toward her. Amara sniffed it, then took it delicately between her fingers and ate it, watching Mina with curious eyes. Mina laughed.
"Don't eat my carrots," she scolded, picking up her knife again. "Go find your own snacks, you weird girl."
It was early afternoon, a few hours after I sent for the search parties, when the men rode in through the gate.
I watched as Vidar rode into the yard, snow coating his dark coat. He dismounted his horse with practiced ease and brushed the flakes from his hair. "Luna," he said, offering me a small smile. "I appreciate your call to return. More days in this cold would have been... difficult."
I returned his smile, measured and polite. "I couldn't let you miss the Alpha's homecoming."
Vidar nodded thoughtfully. "No, of course not. Luna, where would you have my men and me stand when he arrives?"
"By the gate would be best, a short distance from the chiefs, slightly to the side."
He considered this for a moment. "And will you be introducing me to your Alpha?"
"Yes, I will."
Vidar's smile was easy and dry. "Thank you. That's... generous of you."
He turned and walked back to his horse to assist his men. I watched him go, my mind already turning to tonight's feast. In Ironmaw tradition, the visiting Alpha always sat at the right hand of the host. I could only imagine how Fenris would feel with Vidar, the man who had once offered Kael four Alphas and eight hundred fighters to bring him down, at his elbow.
I glanced at Amara, who stood impassively at my side, her eyes fixed on Vidar's back. "Amara, the Alpha is coming home today," I said. "You'll get to see him for yourself tonight. The hall will be quite loud."
Amara tilted her head and took a step closer.
